which food?
« on: November 18, 2009, 02:04:52 PM »
Oh my! So many different brands of food, and no clue what to go with. I'm getting Pepper on Dec 5th, he will be 11 weeks old then, and he's currently on Chudleys food (not sure which). Should I stay on that? What do you recommend for puppies of that age? I've not read much 'good' about Chudleys so am a bit concerned.

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Hi,

Meggie is on James Wellbeloved at the moment which is meant to be really good. Sadly Megs appears to have a sensitive tummy and has had the runs since being on it so I am going to try Burns which is another meant to be good.

She was on Judges originally but I can't seem to find it anywhere. She has some probiotic stuff from the vets now and is on fish and rice but not making a difference so yes, I am off to try Burns now.

My advice is don't change for a couple of weeks - Pepper will have enough changes to contend with so I would leave him on the food he is on until he has settled a bit.   ;)  You can do your own research in the meantime - you need to decide - how much you are prepared to spend, do you want to feed wet or dry food or a mixture of both, will you buy it online or do you need something that you can buy easily locally to you etc etc.

There are plenty of good dry foods - the ones I have used that are widely available are Burns, Arden Grange and James Wellbeloved.  Naturediet is an excellent wet food.  ;) They do not have artificial stuff in them and no rubbish.  If you do decide to change when Pepper is home with you, then do it gradually over a week.  You add a little of the new food to his old food - say 10% of the new food at first and then increase it each day until you are just feeding the new food.  That should keep tummy upsets to a minimum  ;)

I use JWB for my 6 they all thrive on it and 2 of them have dodgy tummies. I would change very slowly as Joules said maybe taking 2 weeks or so. For the first week I would stick with the food from the breeder until the pup is settled in.

JWB is great for sensitive tums, personnaly I would keep Meg on fish with some live yogurt until her tummy settles changing food again will probably not help
I hope she is better soon

Here is the website for Judges - was hoping to see a stockist category for you, I too was given a  bag by the breeder but had to take both mine off the puppy one as it upset their tums

Thanks all for the replies! Very good advice. I will keep him on Chudleys at first, the breeder is going to supply me with some food, and I'll keep researching and checking out ingredients in the meantime.

17 days to go!! (seems like forever  :'( )

Hi all.

I'm new to puppy owning and online forums, so please go easy on me!!!

We picked up Jack (black with white bib working Cocker) last Friday at 9 weeks old and the breeder gave us some Chudleys Puppy to start our little man off in his new life. It looks like most of you are on JWB, is it worth changing over during puppy food stage, or worth waiting until he moves on to his adult food?? It seems that Chudleys recommend he moves on to Junior at between 12 weeks and 6 months, then on again at around 12 months old to adult.

Any help gratefully received.
