Sable cockers

Pupster bought by a breeder which are member of De Spanielclub Nederland cost meanly between 700 and 800 euro's. But some Beeders are more expensive. But if they are more expensive, it's not because of the special colour of the dog.

it is quite the same price here in France for a pup, 800 euro, "breeder" who make a selection and build his kennel only on a rare color such as liver or sable (with most often a real lack of bones or "type" and no selection on temperament) and sell pups  1000-1500 euro just because it is a rare color are not really reputable breeders to my point of view (you can find sable at 1500 euro here, definitively not show type ones).
beware, I'm talking about what I know, which means in France. I'd rather pay more for a black or blue roan dog with an excellent show type, than just for a "special" color.

i got talking to someone who said they were looking for a choc roan pup and found some, the breeder was also breeding sables and the choc/roans were £1500 and sables £2000 i nearly spat my coffee out!

I spoke to a really lovely breeder who had just brought in a sable bitch to breed from - we were discussing her and the breeder told me she had cost quite a lot more and she had a few health niggles (although nothing major) with the pup.

As a owner I'm not sure I would go for a sable in the UK yet - there are very rare and obviously expensive due to that.  I think they are lovely and would definitely look into getting one when the line is more established.

We have a sable. It was a bit of a misfortunate event because he was fairly expensive. But we had just lost my mum's Springer we were both devastated. She said we would only get a puppy if there was one she fell in love with in an instant. That one was Murphy and although he was expensive we got him for Murphy, we've had some troubles I'd be tempted to say colour related because I've seen another Sable acting in the same way. But I don't know ANYWHERE near enough about cockers to confirm that statement so it was probably just a puppy tantrum because the other sable was only 13 months old! I love the colour but if I knew more about it I would have tried to get a 'normal' colour and wait until the sable lines were more established here for showing. I do love my Murphy though and although he's not the best show dog on the planet I think he's the best pet dog on the planet!!

cockersrock, the puppy in your picture looks scarily like Murphy. I think you might have stolen my puppy and taken him back in time!!!

Yes they are bred in the UK but you'd have to save a lot of pennies up as the breeders that have them here seem to charge a premium for a sable pup You'll find some previous threads on sables if you do a search on here - we've had quite a few I think.

Jane is correct , sable cockers are now being brought in purely to make money by some people ,but certainly not by myself  
I chose to breed only blacks in my sable girls first litter and kept a black male to show . Last year we had a mixed litter , Xenia's second and final one .It was carefully planned in the hope of getting a show puppy of any colour . If one of the sables is good enough it will be shown .We had 3 sables that were sold at exactly the same price as the blacks
My problem and biggest fear was that I would accidentally sell to one of these money breeders so I sold to reputable show people I know that will only breed on for health and confirmation not colour .
I guess anyone wanting a sable pup or any pup for that matter should do their homework , make sure the parents are health tested for 1 and perhaps check how many litters the breeder has each year .Please don't support these breeders charging huge amounts , it only sends a message that sables are worth more and they are not .

Just for the record  , I have no sables for sale and have no plans to breed any colour of puppy at all in the next year or 2 .
I will post a photo of one of my sables in puppies , as well bred and beautiful as he may be he is still just a cocker pup .

I have found a few breeders who are only breeding for sable colour, one of which bred even though one parent was a carrier of pra and the other had it! and thats a show breeder. The Kennel Club health screening thing on their website is really good for looking dogs but before you buy a pup.

I agree, I don't think that you should breed from PRA carrying parents just to get a certain colour. I keep refering potential new puppy owners to the KC website to check on what health screening the parents have had. I also give my new owners copies of the health screening certificates as part of their puppy pack. My friend is showing a sable American cocker but it is harder to get placed than with a more popular colour x

I have heard many people say it is hard to get placed with a english sable cocker and the owners have to pick the right judges to go under.

I have a beautiful sable boy named Monty (18 weeks old).  We live in Brussels and bought him here from a wonderful breeder who has several sable dogs and bitches (both black and chocolate sable).  We did pay a little more for him compared to his golden litter mates, but not so much as to make me feel that we had been ripped off in any way.   He was 850 euro compared to his 750 euro litter mates.  the breeder we got him from in fact charges more for her Chocolate and tan and black and tan puppies than her sable ones.  Anyway, he is beautiful and we love him to pieces, after a 10 year wait I finally have my cocker and I couldn't be happier.
