Cut on pad
« on: January 04, 2010, 11:08:55 AM »
Ollie managed to cut one if his smaller pads on his back paw yesterday on our last day in Edinburgh!

It bled for a few mins - i applied some pressure to it and it stopped. He walked ok on it yesterday although we didn't do much walking as we were driving home! This morning he is not walking on it much and looks a bit sorry for himslef - although that could just be tiredness from our holliday!!

It seems to be just a slice not a deep gash or anything!

Is there anything I should do to help recovering or make him a bit more comfortable?

Thanks all

It might have become infected if any dirt got into it when he was walking on it, or it could be deeper than you think it is. I think you'd be best popping him into the vets in case it needs stitched.

I hope he feels better soon. :luv:

Haven't had chance to do anything today I've been so busy at work! Will see how he is when I get home and how he was on his walk and may book him in tomorrow

I did clean it so hopefully no infection and its just a bit sore so he's holding it.

Thanks for replying!

He's milking it tonight!! Cut is nice and clean, no bleeding or anything! He's not been on a long walk today. But he is looking so sorry for him self and limping around with that sad look in his eye!!!

I will maybe put a sock on it tomorrow to keep it clean when he goes out but he won't be walking far!!!

I have various creams I use. Rufus has sliced some of the thick black skin off the large pad on his rear left paw again. Flint paths are a nightmare at this time of year if you have a pheasant to relocate. I have sent off for a boot to give it a proper chance to heal this time. It doesn't seem to bother him much. I check it regularly and apply ointment. I am not sure how long a boot will stay on, but hope it will stop him resorting to three legs to protect it.

Toby also has a slice of skin missing off his pad (right fore paw). After two weeks of wearing boots (both front paws) it was all healed up and I put the boots away yesterday.
But this morning it started to bleed again (not much thankfully) after his morning walk. I've put liquid band-aid on it (not a spray), to give it some protection (it's very wintery here, including salt for the icy roads). So far it's going fine and it has survived two walks. And of course a generous appliance of paw wax.
Hope I don't need the boots again, they're allright but it does cramp his style a bit.

Taz cut his pad recently - i just kept it as dry as possible when out (pair of socks and plastic bag) then left it open when indoors.  It does take a while to heal though.  Hope he feels better soon.

Glad you mentioned Paw Wax Brownsugar - it's not going to help Ollie's graze/cut now but it helps as a preventative in all this ice and snow (and salt etc from grit)

Just hunted mine out tonight  ;)

L&O I would bathe his paw in a weak solution of Hibiscrub and you could put Sudocrem on it as well before his walks (it's so thick it would act as some kind of protective barrier).

Hope it heals soon  :luv:  paw flesh is gross - almost Jelly like as it heals  ;)

Hi Sam cut his pad last week and whilst cleaning the cut we noticed a very small piece of glass which was obviously the culprit. We managed to remove the glass with some tweezers ourselves and he is right as rain now. Hope this isnt the case but might be worth a close look.

Thanks all. The cut it self seems fine - no bleeding pus or anything so no sign of infection. He's holding it up when he first starts walking i presume its tender but when i took him round the block this morning he walked fine on it and it didn't seem to bother him he was more instested in the snow!!

I'm going to take him for a slightly longer walk in a hour - I don't have any sudcrem so should I cover it?

There is loads of snow here powdery stuff - will it be ok uncovered?

Sounds like you're doing a good job with keeping his paw nice and clean. The fact that it's snowy is actually rather a good thing for cut pads as it helps to keep the paws out of the mud/dirt etc..

You could put a sock on his paw, but in my experience these just fall off after a few minutes (even when they're secured onto the leg with tape, bandage etc..!) The sock also seems to give the dog the false impression that it's paw is better and that it can go racing around the park etc.. and this usually leads to the cut opening up again  ::)

So I'd advise that you keep the walk at a slow pace and don't let him go loopy, running around everywhere. Then when you get back from the walk have a look at his cut, maybe put a little antiseptic cream on it if it needs it, and then make sure that his foot can dry out - leaving the cut open to the air so that it has a better chance to heal.

I hope this helps!

Helps loads - I'll let him have a little run as the snow drives him mental and i can't bear to keep him on the lead but will keep it to a min!!! Is germaline ok to use on dogs?

Yes, germaline should be fine  I often use a bit of TCP on my two.

At the moment both of mine have cut pads, Moss also has a deep cut on his leg, and Bella has an open wound on her chest! It's all because some plonker decided to fly tip some corrugated iron sheeting down a steep sided valley that I was then beating with the dogs on a shoot this Christmas. The snow had covered the scrap metal over so neither me or the dogs has any chance of seeing the stuff until it had done the damage  >:(

Vets don't stitch cut pads as the stitches can tear the flesh on the paw because it is impossible to keep a paw imobile for the length of time needed for it to heal. So the best thing to do is keep the cuts a clean and dry as possible, with limited exercise so as not to put any undue stress on the healing tissue.

Obviously if the cut does appear to become infected then the vets can give you some antibiotics. Don't let the vet give you any painkillers unless absolutely necessary, because a painful paw helps to keep the dog slow and steady which actually helps the paw to heal quicker!  :shades:
