anybody got some advice please ?
« on: January 06, 2010, 08:25:27 PM »
I just found a large piece of  dog toe nail on the kitchen floor  :-\  Barnaby was in his bed licking his back foot so had a look and it has cracked clean off leaving a pointed bit of quick sticking out  :o

Any advice on how to treat it please   I was just going to bandage it and put a baby sock on for now, is this ok, and should he see the vet ?

Thanks Jann  :-\

Poor Barnaby! :luv:  If it's not bleeding and isn't hurting him then I'd be inclined to cover it up as you were going to do and just let it grow back. I wouldn't go to the vet unless it was painful or it was an open wound and there was a risk of it getting infected. Can he walk on it ok?

;) Thanks Nicola, yes he's walking on it ok, I imagine it will be a bit sore but it's not bleeding at all. so I didn't really think I needed to see

the vet I'll bandage it up now and try and keep it clean, hopefully it won't get infected but I will keep an eye on it  :shades:

Thank you very much

Ouch  ph34r

One of mine smashed one of his hind claws last year,  he wasnt terribly lame just a little tender there as I discovered when I trimmed it down to tidy it up, the complete claw had completely split in half right up and into his toe :'( :'(

I was concerned about dirt getting up into his toe,  i bathed it for approx a week with salted water however I noticed his toe was starting to become a little inflamed so took him to the vet whom tried to pull part of the claw out of his toe  :'( :'( and then prescribed a very small dose of antibiotic,  the infection cleared but took a while for the split to grow out of his toe but I kept clipping it down regularly to prevent getting hooked up and causing more problem,  grew normally eventually ! its all good now

hope that helps
