Blood in Poo
« on: January 06, 2010, 08:45:19 PM »
I came home from work today to find that Sox had, had a number 2 on the bathroom floor, he gets let out at lunchtime by my neighbour, but due to this weather he sometimes does not want too go out, which I don't blame him, accidents do happen, but there was also a small long line of blood amongst the poo, (sorry to be graphic), which was not with the other stool pile. Hope you understand what i mean!  ph34r

I have never noticed this with his stools before, he seems fine, bouncing and jumping around, and he ate all his food, he went out again about an hour ago and went for number 2 again, I went over and had a look and there were 2 splats of blood this time!

Could this be constipation?

Can anyone give me any advice as to what this is or maybe or should I be worried?

henry had blood in poo and vet told me this is less of a worry in dogs than if it was a human.

henry's poos went very runny after i noticed it. vet told me to starve him for 24 hours to stop the squits. then feed normal food again. did that and he was ok.

is he straining? or runny? has he had a bone which could have scratched him?

Sox has always been somewhat of a strainer, if he cant find a plant high enough for him too deposit on he wont go! its not runny but not hard either but not like it usually is. The colour is slightly lighter than usual.

He gets fed on a Barf Diet, which consists of chicken wings (maybe this has scratched him on the way out) liver and mince and oats.

I'm not a big one for rushing them to the vet but I do tend to take them for stuff like this. Caoimhe had the runs just before Christmas and then she started passing blood, I took her to the vet and she got an antibiotic jab, some Pro-Kolin paste and a 5-day course of antibiotics, apparently there was a bug going round as they'd seen quite a few cases. I starved her for 24 hours and then gave her chicken and rice for a couple of days. She was absolutely fine in herself, running around as usual and it seemed to clear up until the day before yesterday when I noticed a few blood spots again. I rang the vet and they said not to panic unless she gets really squitty again and there's more blood, Rodaidh has an appointment there on Monday so I'm going to take her along and they'll give her another once-over just in case. It could be a number of things really, constipation as you say and he's straining to go, a bug, something he's eaten or swallowed causing irritation... I'd probably wait until the morning and if he passes more blood or appears to be a bit under the weather I'd give the vet a call.

If it continues definitely recommend the vets.  Dark blood is a bigger issue as that means it is coming from further up the stomach, Harv had a severe bout before xmas which came on very quickly but was just as quickly sorted with some anti b's, antepsin and an anti emetic jab.

If this carries on for more than a couple of days, *do* go to the vet.

And if it carries on for any significant time (like more than a fortnight), insist on a full checkup, and make sure it includes ultrasound.  Judi had an intersusseption (gut rolled up inside itself) which very nearly killed her.  Our original vet didn't really take it seriously, and the emergency 24-hour place (who we got to know very well) did X-rays but couldn't do ultrasound, so we carried on with her apparently getting better and then relapsing worse. It wasn't until it reached real emergency levels (like about to die within a day) that we got referred to an animal hospital who could do ultrasound, which showed the intersusseption clearly, and she then needed an emergency op that day to fix it.

Moral of the story: X-rays find swallowed objects, blood tests and stool samples find swallowed substances and kidney problems, "digital examination" (finger up the bum!) finds constipation, but for any other problems in the gut there's no alternative to ultrasound.  It ain't cheap, but it's a damn sight cheaper than multiple trips to the 24-hour vet and emergency ops.
Judi and Alice.  Add them together and divide by two, and they're a pair of normal spaniels.  Individually they're one fragile and over-intelligent little brat who knows exactly how cute she is, and one big hyperactive fuzzball who's too dopey to do anything except what she's told...

We had this problem with Harvey the week before xmas and I was worrying myself silly obver it. I took him to the vets after the 2nd day and it stopped after a course of medication tyo rebuild the stomach and changing to science plan ID for a week.
The vet decided it was either a virus or collitis caused by something new to the diet.

He seems to be ok now, so I guess it was a scratched bottom after eating something, will keep checking just incase.

Thanks everyone for your help  :D

I have had this with my german shepherd before and Bella the other week, I find it happens when they have eaten something that does not agree with them. OH had bought some doggy advent calendars from PAH and Bella got a right gurgly tum and then did a gelatinous poop with a bit of blood. She was fine in herself and has been fine since. I was worried but kept an eye on her If however this was accompanied by anything else or of she had done another poop with blood I would have taken her to the vets.

There were only two situations ever when my dogs had blood in their poos... one was when Flash was seriously ill with food poisoning and he had massive bloody diarrhea. The second time was also Flash last year when he was on antibiotics for a nailbed infection. Those particular antibiotics caused the side effect of blood in his poo, once the meds were stopped, it disappeared within a couple of days.
