Rio - Cuts to Stopper Pads
« on: January 07, 2010, 07:52:45 PM »
How and why does she keep getting them? Every day for the past few days shes come home from her walks with cuts on her stopper pads and hocks. They bleed quite a bit and are quite sore. Mika keeps licking them for her, is it okay? Or should I put some antiseptic cream on and stop Mika from licking them?

Maybe it's the same cuts and she keeps re-opening them? It could be from ice or grit just now, is she doing a lot of fast turns and skidding? I would try not to let Mika lick the cuts, Tilly had stitches in the back of her ear once when she cut it open on some scrap metal and Alfie kept licking the wound and it got horribly infected, the vet had a huge go at me for letting him lick at it ph34r  Do you have any styptic powder? It's good for stopping bleeding and is antiseptic, if not then antiseptic spray or cream should do the same job.

What are the stopper pads?

It's the pad at the back of the foot right at the bottom of the foreleg, if you feel around the back of the wrist joint it's there.

Thank you, will try both  :D I think its from all the harsh stops and turns on the snow. I have some antiseptic spray I'll put on tonight and vaseline on in the morning. Will def keep Mika away from it - don't want it going yucky!

If it keeps bleeding I'd stick a bandage on otherwise they never heal up! Lyra ripped half her stopper pad off and it took ten timesas long to heal as normal skin. The grit will sting like hell in the cuts too so avoid that.

Mum to cockers Lily, Lance and Krumble and lurchers Arwen and Lyra. Hooman sister to Pepper, 13.

Oouch! Poor Lyra  :'( That sounds really nasty. Rio's are doing well with the wax and antiseptic. I've got some stopper pad protectors from Sophie's flyballing days which I'll put on her to stop them from re-opening
