I've never been so scared!
« on: February 01, 2010, 11:59:37 AM »
Took the dogs for a lovely walk yesterday to a place near me called Thornton Resevoir.  The sun was out and the dogs were having a lovely time!  Wilson was coming back when called, paisley was at my side like glue because I had lots of treats and even Isla was coming back for treats more than normal!  She normally just checks on me from a distance!  I was with my friend Sarah and her 5 dogs.  We were having a lovely time!

I was stood with Sarah waiting for her dog to come back to her recall when out the corner of my eye I saw something yellow in the water.  It was Isla (she had a yellow coat on)!  She’s wandered out on a patch of ice and fallen through!  Most of the reservoir had thawed out but this bit was still frozen with about 1cm of ice!  She must have gone through a week patch!  I ran up to the waters edge, Wilson and Paisley came with me!  But I had to stop them going in too!  Sarah was yelling for them to come back to her on the bank!  I paddled in up to my wellies height and made gestures for her to climb out (She’s deaf) but I could tell her coat was weighing her down and she couldn’t get out!  Her little face, I can’t get it out of my head, her face, she looked so scared bless her.  I didn’t even think I just started wading in!  Trying to break through the ice, it wouldn’t have held my weight but it was quite hard to walk through.  I ended up in the water up to just above my waist.  She was still about 4 feet away from me!  So I lay my body across the ice and reached out as far as I could!  I just managed to grab her coat and pull her out!

When I turned around I suddenly realised how flippin cold it was!  And my wellies were getting stuck in the mud at the bottom!  I struggle to get our but they’re joules wellies and I didn’t want to loose them!  Ha ah!  Plus it was still a 20min walk back to the car!

Isla was fine and had ran off ahead, as usual!  I stopped to empty my wellies and we started walking back!  Thankfully it wasn’t windy and once I was out I didn’t feel that cold!  I suddenly realised I hadn’t taken anything out of my pockets before going in!  Didn’t have time to think but somehow my phone stayed dry in my coat pocket!  The treats in my treat bag were a little soggy but Paisley didn’t seem to mind that!  Wilson wasn’t so keen!

When we got home me and Isla dried off and wrapped up in front of the fire!  I’m so glad she was ok!  I’ve never been so scared in all my life!  I don’t know what I would have done if she was that bit further out and out of my depth!  I can’t stop thinking about the whole thing over and over in my mind!  I think I’m still a bit shaken up about it!  I don’t think Isla’s any worse for wear though!

Despite being warned about going on ice, i think i would have done the same.  Instinct takes over from common sense in these situations, glad that both you, Isla and your wellies ( :lol2:) came out of it O.K

What a worry ,just when you think all the ice is gone it only takes one sharp frost to freeze ponds and the like . By mistake I took Bonnie down by the lakes where we walk as there were loads of Football matches on the playing fields on our way to the river. She did her normal run off to the waters edge and luckily I noticed the ice and managed to get her on the lead. You try your best to be so carefull but you can still be caught out. Really glad it had a happy if soggy ending and all are safe including the wellies. I'm sure i would have done exactly the same as you.

My heart was in my mouth reading this.

Katie did a bunk out of her harness on a main road within 2 weeks of getting her, and I'll always remember her face  :o

I'm glad she's ok.

:bigarmhug: Becky and Isla

So glad you are both OK, it was horrible when Lou went missing but to be able to see Isla and to not of been able to reach her would of been horrendous.  I'm sure we would all of done the same in wading in too no matter what we're told not to do  :-*

Oh my goodness what a scare for everyone. Glad it had a happy, if soggy ending.
