Missed Booster
« on: February 03, 2010, 10:31:20 AM »
Hi, I'm work and expecting a call back from the vet to book Indie in.   Basically I forgot her Booster a month ago and have rung to get her booked in, they have said she can't have the booster now because its just over a month and needs to start again with the 2 vacs 3 weeks apart like she had when she was a puppy.

Is this right?    Just over a month doesn't seem long to me.   Any answers appreciated, before they call me back to book her in.

I was 3 months late with Glens and my vets told me that it was fine I had 3 years to get it done before we would have had to starts again...A month is ridiculous.

Is it her yearly booster? If so then I think they are wrong and I would question them

I disagree with that - to me that would be over vaccinating  >:(   I'm guessing you spoke to a vet nurse - could you speak to a vet?

You could get her titre tested instead (although as Jarv will tell you blood from the jugular is not a nice thing  ph34r :shades:)

This was a new vets I was going to try and she told me she could get parvo the lot for me missing it.   :'(   Just rang my old vet and she said just over a month as well BUT has booked me in for a booster this afternoon and she said she'll leave it upto the vet to decide if she needs a full set again.    Can't believe I missed it  :-\

I'll ask about that but I know its not something offered to me before.   Maybe they're just quick to jab.

honestly Jeanette - please don't worry.  One of the reasons that they recommend yearly boostering is because they didn't want to keep the lab dogs (cost  ::) ) longer for a year so they don't actually know for sure how long the immunity lasts.

Jarvis has not been boostered since he was a year old  ph34r

I'm surprised that Indie is not on the 3 year vac's cycle anyway - Lepto is boostered annually but the rest are on a 3 year cycle :dunno:  (check that one out too  ;) )

Helen

Just so I have my facts straight - what is a booster i.e. which out of the vaccines does it boost

surely if its the only one then thats the only jab she'd need.

Its confusing - guess thats the intention.

I don't want her being pumped full of stuff if she doesn't need it.   Off to google boosters now so I can pretend to know what I am talking about this afternoon  :005:

depends on what she's had before - a lot of vet's are using Nobivac DHPPi which covers canine distemper, infectious hepatitis, parvovirus disease and parainfluenza virus.  This is a 3 year booster so the only one they will annually boost is for Lepto, and then the others in one shot on a 3 yearly cycle.

If she's not on this scheme than see if she can be  ;)

Thanks, will look at her card and the stickers when I get home to see if that gives me a clue to whats she on and will definitely ask them.   I think they're pushing the 2 vaccines on me because its more money for them  >:(

Mine are also on the Nobivac 3 year cycle, I can't see how missing a booster by just a month means that Indie needs to start again with a full course of puppy injections. Rodaidh missed his year one booster (the only one I do after a year) as he had his knee operation at the time it was due so he got it about 2-3 months late and the vet was fine with giving it and Ro was fine afterwards, that was 2 years ago now and he hasn't had another booster since (except lepto) as it's not due until next year (he has been titre tested though).

We were told if it was their FIRST booster and had missed it, then yes the whole course would have to be started again, my vet only gives boosters every 2 years, so can't see why they would want to do the whole course again if it's only 1 month late......sounds like more money for them to me rather than what is important for the dog.

Just tell them you only want the booster

Nobivac sounds very familiar to me - if so why was that silly nurse saying my dog could get parvo - oh they make me cross

I'm going to question the vet - the nurse at my old vets which is where I'm going to take her said she would leave it up to him so he'll get the third degree about what he is actually giving to my dog.

Thanks all - straight off to the vets after work so this has been very useful    :D

I'll be interested to hear what they say too, I was late with Dave's first year booster and he had to be done again - although for the life of me, I can't remember how late we were - I think it was about 3 months :-\
