Doggy smelly ears, please help
« on: February 04, 2010, 08:06:18 PM »
Henry, my black and white ticked cocker who is ageing at 11 and a half years has a serious problem, he is extremely smelly. he is so energetic and lovely but I believe his ears are a problem, he rubs his ears on any inanamitive objects and gets irratated. He has been to the vet and they give him virbac to clean his ears and surolan, he got groomed on Sat and he has regular baths but he smells so bad its hard to sit next to him on occasion.

I have changed his diet but as soon as I try with any manufactured food, you cannot sit next to him for a long period without, in the morning it brings a new meaning to morning breath,at the moment he is having dinners made by me! which kind of works and it has improved but on occasions I work late so have resorted to normal doggie food, but running out of recipe ideas and ideally would like to treat his problem.

Dont get me wrong I trust vets but the stuff they are giving him is not working and now looking for more natural alternatives, can anyone advise? would be very greatful. Henry is my mate and need to be close to him again. I will try anything so any suggestions however bizarre (not dangerous) will be considered . Thanks

;) Many of us use Thornits powder regularly for the ears

For a smelly mouth I would first check for lip fold infection, if there is none then I would routinely wipe round his mouth area after each meal with a dilute solution of hibiscrub !

Agree with Jann - Thornit is magic for keeping ears lovely and fresh  ;)  You can get it on e-bay - you only need a small bottle - it will last for ages  :D

I once had a cocker like yours, boy was she smelly and I remember every year when we took a trip to the vets for the annual boosters I'd tell them again that my dog hummed. They always laughed. She had smelly breath, butt, coat ears and paws. She was that bad that when she walked passed there was  a lingering after smell for about 5 mins. I later found out she had a condition called seborrhea which is an over production of oil. I took to bathing her weekly to keep the smell in check. As for ears as others have said there is thornits. For smelly breath you could try adding parsley to the diet. I would however suggest the possibility of another trip to the vets due to his age just to rule out any physical problems which may be causing these symptoms.
