Bella doesn't like to walk!
« on: February 09, 2010, 09:59:25 AM »
Bella is 16 weeks, and she hates going for walks.  ph34r
Is this normal and just due to her age and her still getting used to the big wide world? I've looked through the forum boards for similar threads, but haven't come across any.

Before she was fully vaccinated, I carried her everywhere in a bag so she'd be well socialised. In the last few weeks of that she would whimper more and more, and seem to want to get down and explore. But since she's been able to safely go on the ground, she doesn't seem to enjoy it in the slightest. I started with just short walks - around ten minutes - to daughter's school and back. All the way there she whimpers, keeps stopping and sitting down, and wants to be picked up. On the way back she pulls like a train. I'm following 'the perfect puppy' method of standing still every time she pulls. I say 'ah' as she reaches the extent of the lead, and don't move again until there's some slack. This means that it takes about 20 mins to get down our (very short) cul de sac!  ph34r If I run with her, to avoid her pulling, then she just runs absolutely full pelt to home.

Soooooo.... I figured if the on lead wasn't working, I'd try to make walks pleasant with off lead exercise. We've been taking her to nice safe locations and walking her for around 20 minutes. Again, as we walk out there's lots of whimpering and jumping up to be picked up, and on the way back she picks up our scent and just takes off when we get near to the car. I have to put her on the lead on the way back now because on one occasion she took off and ran full pelt back to the car - in a car park by a road - I was terrified! Her recall is good otherwise, but obviously that's useless if she doesn't recall in a dangerous situation!  ph34r

She isn't interested in games when we're out, and has very little interest in treats - when we're at home, she's very motivated by both. If my OH carries her whilst we're out, she gets very obviously cross and is determined that I should carry her instead (the whimpering takes on a very cross tone and she mouths us both). If I carry her she settles down completely. If we stop and settle in one place, she doesn't whimper and explores quite happily - it's the actual walking that she doesn't like. She was very scared of other dogs to start with, but that's improved a lot and she's cautiously interested and friendly now.

Should I be concerned about this and get her checked out by the vet for any discomfort she may be experiencing that could mean she doesn't want to walk? She runs around in the house and garden like a lunatic. Or should I just keep on with the short walks and trying to make them a nice experience for her?

Hi Woody didn't like walking just before Christmas and we decided it was because of the salt on the road (it was that icy period).  I would check her paws if you haven't already done for any cracks or sore bits.  A neighbour has a Jack Russell puppy about 6 mths old and he only wants to walk to do his "business" and as soon as that is done he similarly runs for home.

Hope you work it out she looks beautiful.

One of my pups, Wilberforce, was exactly the same. He just didn't like going out. Despite socialising and his brother having a great time out on walks, he would still prefer to be at home! Even chicken didn't encourage him. Tbh, he grew out of it. The more that I made him do, the more he got used to it. I tried not to pick him up when he whined or pawed at my legs and just ignored him. As he got more confident, he started to walk of his own accord and now likes going for walks like a proper dog! Having said that, I do think he'd be perfectly happy sitting with me on the sofa forever and never leaving! He's just one of those clingy dogs  :-\ Which is the complete opposite to my other dog, who'd quite happily live outside for the rest of his life and never see me again!

It's normal, try not to worry. It's all still very new to her :luv: Dave was a little similar and I gave up walking from home until he got over it.. Don't push her too hard but don't mollycoddle her either, carry on as normal and let her see that you're not worried about anything. Dave improved massively when we rehomed Normy when he was 4 months old - she was 2.5 at that point and gave him confidence when he was out, he loved following her about and really came out of his shell. I'm not suggesting you rehome an older dog  but it might be worth trying to find other dogs that suit her that you can walk with to help her ;) Or post on here for a puppy meet up there might be some other COL puppies near you :D

Bonnie Boo was a real little madam as a puppy she would just point blank refuse to walk or when a little bit up the road she would plonk her bum down and just sit  >:D. She grew out of it after a very short while and now its all I can do to stop her from wanting to go out all the time

Thank you all for your replies! I just needed reassurance that this is normal, and that I'm not ignoring the signs of any problem. I'll just keep at it and ignore the whinging.  ;)

When we were out on Sunday, we met an 8 month old blue roan bitch, and after her initial reservations, Bella had a fantastic time chasing her around like a crazy thing. She even chased her into Frensham little pond!  :005:
Here's how she looked before the walk.....

in the midst of a mad chase....

and here she is after her dip....

Thanks again for the reassurance  :D

Ah thanks!  :luv:

She was really scared of other dogs to start with, then was absolutely terrified by a boisterous lab and boxer (two incidents on same walk - the dogs were just being friendly, but she ran screaming  :'( ). We took her on a social dog walk with other puppies and she got a bit of confidence. The blue roan cocker on Sunday was also quite boisterous, but once Bella got into the swing of things, she was giving as good as she got!  :005:

Do you often walk at Frencham Little ponds?  I have just started walking Saffi there as its a lot less muddy than my local walk.  I haven't managed to stop Saffi jumping up! >:D  When I turn my back on her I get a pair of muddy footprints on my behind! :005: Very embarrassing for the rest of the walk! ph34r.  Its so nice to get back and not need to put Saffi in the shower dry her and then get changed!

Saffi is just a bit older than Bella at 4 and a bit months. She is a working type and a bit full of energy but if you thought it worth a try we could arrange to meet up and walk them together.  PM me if it’s of any interest.

Phillipa, what a coincidence - the blue roan Bella played with at the pond (pictured) was also called Saffi.

Yes I'd love to meet up - I'll PM you. We quite often go to Frensham for the same reason as you; sand is so much easier than mud. :D
