Pulling Puppies!!
« on: February 12, 2010, 01:39:58 PM »
Hi there - can anyone give advice about how to stop Woody pulling me along on the lead.  I've tried the turnving around method but any way is good for him, he just wants to go!

What do you think about the Halti halter things?

We live in depths of the country so no pavements and try to keep off roads as much as possible.  He pulls so much his eyes bulge! Dappy dog.

Thank you

Maybe, try just stopping rather than changing direction?  You need to make sure he doesn’t think he is able to pull you around.  I know others swear by various harnesses - I haven’t resorted to these though as the stop method seems to have worked for me.

Have a look at this post. http://www.cockersonline.co.uk/discuss/index.php?topic=69730.0  I posted yesterday about some success with an Easy Walk harness, but Halti harnesses seem to work as well.

I was wondering whether a harness was better than a lead, Ben isn't ready for going out yet as he has only just had his 2nd jab but it will be nice to know for when i get him out xx

i had problems with my charlie on his lead, i remember some one saying a hareness is used to pull things and i surpose they were right,
he was terrible and put more body weight behind him.
so i tried one of the leads with the two loops one goes round the neck and the other over the nose, they are connected instead of tightening round the neck it tightens round the snout the leads look like think rope.
when he pulled, it tightens on his nose and gave me more control,
he hated it, i only used it twice ,
amazing difference after 1st time, i had the lead just on my little finger walking along gob smacked.
everytime he starts going back to pulling i use it once and he remembers, brilliant.
his stride is super on it nose clean in the air.
i dont know what i would of done.
hope it doesnt sound nasty cos its really not, try one honest.
let me know if you do, im glad i found it. they are in all shops that sell leads,
good luck

Thanks everyone - I'm going to try the two looped lead (as it's cheapest) and if that fails move up to a halter.  Really need him to be walking better at Easter as we are going away with him to a small seaside town with pavements, and people!!

Do you clicker train? Freddie does pull but if I have a pocket full of treats and click/treat when the lead is slack plus say 'good boy!' he will walk nicely sometimes! :lol2: Can't say he is perfect and when he sees the field where he is let off he just ignores me but hey ho! ::)
