Looking for a long lasting chew.
« on: February 17, 2010, 10:48:55 PM »
Tia chews fast! Really fast! As in, two bites of a carrot, and it's gone, or a few chews of a small rawhide, and it is swallowed! :o A chicken wing is down in one gulp. :P

She isn't interested in a large rawhide, as it is obviously not as edible in her eyes. ::)  I have tried paddywhack, as I read it take hours to chew - she made a large piece last 7 minutes!

She needs to have low fat/low calorie, as she is a little overweight (funnily enough! :005:), so I am at a loss of what to give her to keep her satisfied.

Any ideas? :D

How about pizzle sticks? These keep our lot occupied for hours usually & are not high in fat. We buy in bulk from Zooplus but you can get them in small quantities on Ebay & I've seen them in pet stores too. Just don't ask what they are :005:

:shades:  watching this with interest, I have the same problem with Flo  ::)

Until Barnaby came along she had no interest in chews at all.

Fiona, I find that those sterilised bones with the paste filling in them last Chloe ages. I can refill them afterwards with anything, even her meal. She doesn't really like rawhide chews too much, but another thing that keeps her occupied for ages, is her kong filled with tuna and yoghurt...frozen! A marrow bone is what she likes most of all, but I can rarely get hold of them!

yep, a nylabone was the first ever chew I gave Chloe, she turned her nose up at it and even though I've tried a flavoured one, she really isn't interested  Lots of dogs seem to love them though  ::)

Rodaidh loves them, he carries them around, throws them around and chomps away on them for ages almost every day. I buy the large size ones and they last for yonks, he only really manages to kind of 'fray' the ends. Tilly isn't interested in them though and Caoimhe will occasionally have a chew but she's nowhere near as keen as Ro.

Zooplus do a great variety of chewy things, they love pizzles and the ostrich and venison chews from there.

Ours go through chews in no time to! The best ones we found were Antos Meaty Bones - they lasted a-g-e-s. I bought them at an agility show. I've looked for them on the internet but they're quite expensive  :-\

People laugh at me because I'm different, but I laugh at them because they are all the same.

We have a version of Nylabones called Marrobones - same type of material except that have a meaty paste in the centre which makes them a bit more interesting - last for days and all the dogs like them.

http://www.lamp-post.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=CH578

We also use the stuffed Kongs frozen with peanut butter, cream cheese and a dog biscuit of some sort really wedged in and then frozen.

I know exactly what they are! :020: :005:

She's not fussed with the filled bones, she licks the end and gives up. ::) I've also tried the frozen tuna and yoghurt - she somehow still wolfs it down. :o

Has anybody tried nylabones ?   I haven't !
Duggie had Nylabones when he was smaller, and he wasn't in the slightest bit interested, neither is Tia - to them, they are just a piece of flavoured plastic, so they don't want them. :-\

I think I'll try the other suggestions though, particularly the Antos Meaty Bones, as I like the Antos Chews - anything is worth a try! :005:

Lottie has the cigar sized rawhide chews and they last her quite along time once she's paced the house for hours looking for hiding places for it :luv:

She very occasionally has a pigs ear as a treat, she's just had one (as it's the last night of our holiday :005:) and it's taken her 45 minutes to devour it.

I can't even touch a pigs ear let alone pizzles, urghhh!!!! :020:

Lottie turned her nose up at a nylabone too and she'll try ANYTHING :o

The cigar sized rawhides last about 5 minutes. :o They have had an occasional pig's ear, but too fattening, and again, only last minutes. :-\

I handed them the pig's ears by holding the plastic bag! :005:
