Foot Biting
« on: February 18, 2010, 10:20:34 AM »
We have only just been able to take our Cinders out for walks since having her second jab.  I have noticed though when we get home she is constantly biting her back right foot as though there is something wrong with it.  I have had a good look and feel of it (when she is not trying to wriggel away!!) and it seems fine.  Hubby tells me I am over reacting that that she probably just has an itch or it could be her paws are aching from walking as she isn't used to being walked on concerete or gravel type pathways.  We only go out for about half an hour (if that!).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi there
My little nell is 16 weeks so has been going on little walks for a few weeks. She also does this, the first time she had got a little thorn (splinter) in it which she managed to get out herself. Since then she does the same thing but doesnt seem in pain. Ive put it down to her nibbling bits of grit, stone etc out of her toes!!

Hi There!
Thanks for your response!  I have had a good feel of her foot and pad and can't feel anything, plus I am sure she would yelp if I did find something that hurt her!  I suppose it is like having a new pair of shoes that hurt for the first few times you wear them - she isn't used to being out and about in the big wide world, so different floor textures will feel strange to her!

Bracken does this sometimes too... we think he might have stepped on a nettle in all his bouncing through the undergrowth.

I know there are a few posts on COL about dogs nibbling their paws after doing that. A foot wash in a mild TCP solution (v. mild) was suggested, but haven't tried that yet as it was a while ago since he last chewed at his paw.

Of course, he's a clever fellow and could just be doing it to get attention from his loving and slightly neurotic Mum  >:D
