Lactol puppy milk
« on: March 08, 2010, 09:17:06 PM »
Hi,

All going well I hope to bring home a 8 week blue roan cocker soon.

Somebody suggested to me because of hip dysplasia in cockers that it would be a good idea to feed her lactol puppy milk and ready brek for her meal in the morning.

Has anyone ever done this before? Is it really necessary?

Gosh, this is taking me back.  Sophie, my last cocker, used to love Lactol, in fact my mother in law, who only lived just up the road, always kept a tin in and gave her a bowlful each time she visited, which was at least once a week.  I also kept some in and gave it to her.  I used to think of it as a vitamin drink for her.  It certainly didn't do her any harm, she lived very healthily until she was 14.

Ellie didn't like it as a puppy, might try her again on it now she is older.

Pups of this age don't need milk, it would probably upset her tummy if she's not used to having it, so I wouldn't suggest giving it to her.  A good complete food will give her all the vitamins etc. that she needs.

No, she needs to be on a quality puppy food. While milk and cereal probably won't hurt her (but could possibly give her the squits; not helpful with housetraining  >:()
it's certainly not the best she could be getting. Lactol is meant for unweaned puppies; and a human breakfast cereal is grains only, which dogs don't digest well.

While hip dysplasia is not unheard of in cockers, it's not really common; I imagine the advice came from someone used to the large, fast growing breeds, where protein content would be of more concern.

Find out what the breeder was feeding and start her on that  ;)
