Puppy size
« on: March 12, 2010, 01:22:26 PM »
Sorry for all the posts...
I am a new owner and new to this forum, so I just have so many questions that I want to ask about

Just wondering, what size is normal for a 11 week old pup (mine is born 22 December, so she actually turns 3 months next tuesday.) Somebody I know, who used to have a cocker, commented that she looked small for her age, that she looked like maybe she was eight weeks old...

She weighs about 3,6 kilos, was about three kilos one and a half weeks ago. Do you guys think that is small for her age? Her mother is a little bit smaller than average, while the father is average or a little bit bigger. I do hope my puppy will be a standard size cocker, however its not the most important thing, of course. The breeder told me that these puppies (mine and her siblings) was not to good at eating at first, they started eating their own food at five weeks of age, not three weeks as puppies often do, she says

I don't think there is a "normal" size at any age.  I know quite a few cockers and they tend to come in different heights/weights.  Taz's mum was a little dot whilst his dad was big (who taz has taken after).  As long as she is happy and healthy i wouldnt worry about size - there is not a lot you can do about it anyway (apart from weight i guess).

good luck with your little one, there is masses of support on here.

Hi, and welcome to COL.

I had the same problem with Ozzy when he was younger and he's still not a great size.  He's now 15 months old and weights 9.5kg.  They are all so different and as long as she is healthy and happy then don't worry about how big she is.  You'll find she has plenty of power (especially pulling a lead!) no matter what size she is  :005:

Good luck with puppy  ;)

I really wouldn't worry about her size. My friend got her cocker the same day as me (different breeder/litter), hers is two days older than Harvey, yet Harvey is twice her size...she's a normal healthy pup, full of energy, just a wee bit wee! Harvey (born 16/12/09) is 6.6 kilos - he's not chubby (going through a lanky spurt!!)

My Jessie is a small cocker and weighs about 9kgs.  She will be 6yrs in May.    Very active runs like a whippet :luv:

I think that if the whole structure of the dog's body is small it's not a problem...if it takes the food it has to take for its age & has a nice little tammy is OK. If the dog has less weight because it is thin meaning you can see the ribs, then better check it with the vet...

I agree with PP - there is no 'normal' size.  All I can offer is a comparison - when Mason came to us at 10 weeks old he weighed 2.7kg.  He is 19 months old now and weighs 13kg.

Thanks to all of you! It is the whole body stucture that is small - she is not thin, really  ;)
one of her sisters was smaller than she is, some were bigger. But I love her the way she is, of course. Thanks for the comparison, tigs71.
That tells me that even a pup is small at this age, it can still be a standard size cocker
(which I read is about 12-15 kilos).

Thankyou, when I saw your little lady in another post (a real sweetheart) I was struck by how similar they look in the puppy stage.

My little cocker girl Cilla is the same age as yours, in fact born the same day! She is 4 kg, so a little bigger than yours but she was the largest puppy in the litter. I wouldn't worry. They all have growth spurts at different times.

When Saartje took over our home she was 9 weeks and 4 kilo's. In december when we went to get Teun, he was 8 weeks and only 2,95 kilo.
It took Saartje 9 months to get 9 kilo on here lovely body. Teun already weighs 8,2 kilo and is only 4,5 months, he's not fat at all. So you can see it doesn't say much.
greetings,
Marina, Saartje and Teun
