Abbi doesn't think she can jump onto the settee.....
« on: March 15, 2010, 10:12:58 PM »
Am I the only 1 with a cocker that has to be lifted up onto the settee/bed? We have always discouraged Abbi from jumping up and she is very good at not, but to the extent that I think she feels she's not ABLE to jump up onto the settee etc without being hoisted up! I know that she CAN do it because a few times when she's got excited she has just jumped up and then stands there as if to say "how did I do that!!"

She puts her front feet up and then just scrambles and gets nowhere. If we ignore her just just stands there looking and then whines to be helped. I suppose I shouldn't moan but sometimes I've got a lapful of stuff/computer etc and she wants to sit next to me and I have to unload it all and get her up!

Anyone else have a cocker who needs help? She is nearly 1 and it's only recently that we've even let her on the settee as I always said she wouldn't be allowed, but she is worming her way further into our hearts everyday!!

:rofl1: :rofl1: for a minute there I thought you was describing my Molly  :005: She is exactly the same........we also said we would not allow her on the settee but that rule didn't last very long because every time we shut the front door and looked through the window Molly was making herself comfortable on the settee  >:(  so we decided it was a silly rule anyway  :005: but the funny thing is when we are in the house and she comes over to the settee and we invite her up she tries to jump up but only manages to get her front legs up and then looks pathetic  ::) I always have to bend down and help her up even though I KNOW she can do it  >:(  so the answer to your question is No you are not the only one  :005:

Phew! Thanks for that, I thought maybe she was abnormal! I know that she never gets up on the settee when we're out and we even have to entice her to come up really. Before we got Abbi I read everything I could get my hands on about training etc and setting boundaries. I think it has paid off as she is so well behaved and knows her limits. I was worried about having a dog that jumped up and down off the furniture and scratched it (leather settees) but as she is so gentle have decided that she is fine cuddled up next to me!

They just take over out hearts in the end!

Nope you are definately not alone!

Pickle manages to mount beds/sofa no problems at all.

Branston seems to "forget" he knows how to sometimes and gets half way and sort of hangs there looking pathetic!  Funny thing is when the sofa or bed gets in the way of his "wall of death" circuits he can clear the arm of the sofa in one bound - let alone reach the seat cushions!

  • To understand a cocker, you need to be a cocker!

Wow, my two slink along the hall and into the bed when one of us get up for the loo during the night! They have no shame, and Maddi is called ninja dog in this house! she can go anywhere undetected because she is so light on her feet  :lol2:

Charlie doesn't do this in the house. He can jump on anything. However he just waits to be lifted into the car, either the back or on back seat. He just refuses to jump and puts his front paws up to wait for his lift.

That's exactly what happened with Fraser (who's asleep on the sofa beside me as I type.) I read the books, learned that it was important that the dog not think it was entitled to get up on the furniture as they could become territorial and snap at you when you wanted to sit down. Would invite Fraser up occasionally and have to get my hands under his bottom and haul him up. And then one day he sproinged like a deer onto the sofa. He didn't even look as though he gathered his haunches under him, just suddenly lofted into the air as if he weighed nothing and settled in. Like you, decided it was a silly rule (though I do have to fight for space just because he becomes such an inert little lump.) Now, unfortunately, he started to sproing onto the bed. That one I don't think he even knew he could do it which is too bad as it was the last peaceful refuge of the cat. Earlier today he squirted up and did a little jig up there he was so pleased with himself.

we have the opposite problem, with things a bit higher up, like a dining chair/ our computer chair, Bracken will jump up but then decide she can't get down and will sit their whimpering...
