Joint Help
« on: March 24, 2010, 09:37:41 PM »
Hey,

As Meg is getting a bit older now (has reached her 'senior' years ;)) and has slight arthiritus in one of her back legs we want to get her a supplement that will help her along a bit. A while back she was on tablets called 'supplex' from the vets and to be honest we didnt see much difference in her. So we then put her on Hills JD Prescription Diet (For joint care) and we saw a bit of improvement in her mobility (shes not the most active dog ;)) but not enough of a difference to be spending £70 per bag of food.

Can anybody recommend a decent joint care supplement (tablets prefered but doesnt have to be) that will help her along a bit (that isnt too expensive)? Im making her sound like a criple :005: she's not at all but we just want to know we are doing the best for her as she ages :luv:. There are so many of these type of products on the internet and they all say they do similar things but obviously some will be better than others.

Thank-you in advance :luv:

Rodaidh gets Cortaflex, it was highly recommended by the orthopaedic vet after his knee operation. I use the liquid but I think it's also available as tablets. I've also got one called Yumove which is made by the Yumega folk which I give to all of them as a precaution as they get a lot of exercise and are also out training and working, it's in tablet form and has glucosamine and green lipped mussel in it amongst other things.

Same as Nic, here.  I've used Cortaflex in liquid form for my previous Cocker who had arthritis and for Mocha who has a recurring shoulder injury.  I found it to be really good.  I then changed to Yumove as it's much cheaper and I use Yumega products, and it seems to be just as good.  There certainly hasn't been a deterioration in Mocha's condition since I swapped over.   ;)  Milo gets it as a precautionary measure because he does agility.

My friend started her Golden Retriever Ruby on Yumove about 10 days ago and thinks she can see a difference already. Ruby is eight and a half and seems to move a bit stiffly at times and finds jumping into the car a bit of an effort nowadays.

I have Mason on joint care already as he had a few problems with limping when he was a pup - he has had no issues at all since being on them  :D

http://www.petmeds.co.uk/p-3356-flexivet-start-glucosamine-chondroitin-tablets-200.aspx  they are a bargin here and at www.vetuk.co.uk (200 pack last 400 days for a Cocker) I have seen them at almost twice the price elsewhere

They have good levels of Glucosamine and chondroitin and they are safe to give on a long term basis

Along with the ones mentioned above you can also try fish oils where the omega 3 content is high, acai berry, herbs and magnatherapy.

My inlaws have two elderly labs on Joint Aid for Dogs - has made a difference especially to the little bitch.  Comes in different size packets/tubs and they will send you a free sample

Our elderly rough collie had arthritis from the age of 8 and we started her on pricey vet stuff, then just put her on Tesco glucosomine and condroitin tablets - it worked just as well at a quarter of the price and she lived happily to the grand old age of 15.
