Hi guys, Maisie has been so good that i havent had to ask anything for months! However she is 10month old now and we went away for 1 day to London.  My sister in law has always had our older dog Bella, and loves her to bits. She was happy therefore to have them both for 24hours.

Whilst Bella has been there many times from a young age, Maisie has only been to visit a couple of times before.  Bella took to going from the beginning, never caused any problems etc.

However we picked them up this morning and sister in law, who WAS having the dogs for 2 weeks while we went on holiday has now said that she wont have them for 2 weeks. (she is home for one week and then her 21 year old son was going to have them for the last week) but she doesnt think her son can cope!

Basically Maisie wee'd and poo'd everywhere. EVEN ON THE SOFA!!  Brand NEW sofa! TWICE!!  once whilst being cuddled! she was sitting there quite happy and just pee'd all over herself and the girl holding her!

Now she does have accidents at home. she pee'd on the landing the other day. so she isnt 100% reliable yet. But to do it on the sofa! why!?  can anyone offer any advice? or reasoning?

S in Law took her out every hour for a wee, she would not go, but when she came back in the house would go straight into the lounge and do it on the floor!

We are very upset. Was Maisie scared? she was quite happy apparently, went for walks was wagging tail and happy as anything.  I jsut dont understand.  We may have to cancel our holiday because i dont want her in kennels and our 5 kids will be distraught!!

Please help  :'(

Maybe she just didnt understand where she should go to the toilet.

House training doesnt automatically transfer to other peoples houses and if your SIL didnt get chance to reward her for going outside she probably didnt make the connection thats where she should go.

What did your SIL use to clean up where she had weed in the living room  could the sent of been left there encouraging her back to it?

Maybe she was holding it in as she wasnt sure where to go and became excited when cuddled causing her to wet herself.

Could you not take her round to your SIL for visits so you could have chance to reinforce her house training while you are there? If it has been a little stressful for her it would also help her relax and become used to the new enviroment.

When Flynn gets worried he wets himself, normally on the sofa or in his crate and when Jack gets really excited he wees (normally all over someones feet  :005:) so without seeing it happen its difficult to say why.

I agree with crazy cocker gang. If they're not sure where they're supposed to go then it will lead to accidents. Id try visting again with you there and show her where to go. Once shes managed it once or twice and got rewarded she'll start to understand. It might take abit of patience to get her to go first time.

Also ive found it helpful to put wees on command. Then when i go somehwhere new i can show them where to go with the command and then it seems to click "oh this is where i go toilet when i come here". Thinking about it with my oldest cocker he learnt it because he used to exciting wee everywhere  :005: . The only way i managed it was getting him to wee on arrival (before it got exciting) with the "wee wee" command. Its now habit that we arrive somewhere and ask him for a wee and thats where he knows to go for the whole vist.

Id also practice at other peoples houses as she'll start to generalise that the shouldnt be weeing inside anyones house and that outside is always the right place to go. It will make vists to any relatives houses more likely to be  accident free

Hope that helps

I would not agree with the statements above. I think it is a clear sign of protest. No dog would ever poo on a sofa because it does not understand where to go to the toilet.

thanks for your input guys.  She didnt poo on the sofa btw, she just did a wee. apparently my  SIL left her in the lounge (laminate floor so thought would be ok) for 5 mins, when she came down was a tiny wet puddle on the sofa.  Then her sons gf was cuddling her on the sofa and she wet herself. If it had been poo i would agree it sounds like defiance as Maisie has very rarely ever pood in the house even at home. she prefers the outside.  I do agree that we should have took her up and reinforced the toilet training command there. there is no enclosed garden so Maisie had to go out on a lead. this could have confused her.  I have since come to the conclusion that the poo accident was Bella. as the poo was runny and very smelly and large.  Bella had a bad reaction to carrots and i think Maisie got the blame, poor thing. oh dear, what a disaster. thanks again peeps  :luv:

I would think she was maybe a bit worried about being in unfamiliar surroundings and with people she didn't know too well.  IMO some dogs take to changes without a backward glance, but others are a little more sensitive and take a bit longer.

First time I took Tiff to my mums Tiff went in the back garden for a wee and as I was saying 'D'you like my new dog then mum'....the reply was 'She's lovely, but she's cr@pping on my hall carpet'  ph34r)  :o  We've been regular visitors since and there's been no further accidents.

Edit:  Tiff was 4yrs old when she came to me btw
