First overnight stay!
« on: March 31, 2010, 04:26:52 PM »
Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has any advice on taking your dog to someone else's house?

We are going to the in-laws for Easter and it will be the first time we have taken Rupert overnight.

We went to a friends on the weekend where he peed on the doormat  ::) our fault really as he had just had some water and we should have taken him out sooner. They are in a second floor flat so no garden.

Hes fully toilet trained at home (except for overnight) and sits by the back door when he needs to go. Should we try to train him to go outside at the in-laws - we are only there 2 days? they have a big enclosed garden but it leads off the kitchen and not the lounge like in our house so I'm worried we wont always see him when he needs to go.

When do they learn that they shouldn't pee in anyones house not just their own?

I have visions of spending the whole weekend clearing up after him!

thank you

Whenever we go to someone else's house I'll take the dogs outside to the back garden soon as we arrive and say "get busy" (their word for going to the loo) - effectively showing them where the toilet is.  I would make sure that you take him outside regularly so that he has every opportunity to do the right thing, and the usual house training routine - after playing, after eating and after sleeping to be on the safe side.

I'm generally paranoid when I take Roly anywhere as when we went to pick up Lexi he peed twice up against furniture (something he never does at home), but I think that was because there were a lot of dogs in the house and lots of smells, so had to keep him on the lead after that.  He's never done it again.

Hi, I've just had our 1st overnight stay at my parents.  Odie is nearly 14 weeks old and isn't fully toilet trained yet so I have to keep taking him outside for the usual (every hour/after drinks etc).  I took a few panels of his puppy pen to keep him safe/rests etc and out of harms way and he was brill!  I had his carrier for his bed overnight next to me he was fine.  As long as you know what might happen, you can plan in advance for it!   ;)
Both taken away from us far too soon. x  RIP Angels Odie & Archie, causing mayhem at the Rainbow, no doubt!
