You should get someone to go in and say they are having a huge BBQ and need chicken wings for it, then when he gets a load in, you can send your pal in, and then freeze them! ;) :D

Hi i've just bought some fresh chicken wings from Morrisons and put them into the freezer, the problem is i have never raw fed any dog. My husband seems to have this problem that they should be cooked and defrosted and i have said why do you think they call it raw feeding???? Typical male >:( The question is how do i start of giving Duke his first chicken wing frozen or slightly frozen? and do i give it him instead of a meal then feed him later with kibble?  I also have this vision of him getting it stuck or having the trots :005:...

For his first I would let it fully defrost.... not all dogs like the texture of frozen food, and it will already be a completely new experience for him.  I would replace one meal with 1 or 2 wings - we started by giving Honey a wing at lunchtime on a weekend, as we were home with her (not relying on a friend feeding her lunch) and she was on 3 meals at that stage.  She got on so well that she is now fully raw fed, and thriving!!  :D

Just to add, under no circumstances listen to your husband (at least on this subject) - NEVER FEED COOKED BONES!!!  Cooked bones can splinter and cause injury...

Many of us of have had the same concerns when giving the first wing.  Firstly they definitely need to be raw.  Fully defrosted is probably a good place to start as often very cold food can make dogs sick.  When I first started feeding wings to Mason I popped on some vinyl gloves - gave the wings a bash with a rolling pin (make sure there are in a food bag or it goes everywhere  :D) - and then held onto the wing until I was happy that he had crunched it up enough to swallow it.  I remember the sound of him crunching the bones used to go through me but now it doesn't bother me in the slightest.  Don't be alarmed if Duke brings back some of the bones - it's not something Mason has ever done but it does happen and is nothing to worry about.

I wouldn't worry that the chicken will give him the trots - it isn't likely unless he is intolerant to chicken which I am guessing you would already have found out by now.

Raw food should be fed at different times to kibble and you should try to leave at least 5 hours between the two food types to avoid any problems.

Good luck and let us know how you get on  :D

Just to let you know Charley has been having one a week now - after his training on a Sunday :) we take out of freezer on a Fri night ( well mum or dad does as i live away ) leave in fridge until sunday lunchtime - we do reduce his brekkie on  a Sunday as he has training treats at class and give him a smaller dinner too in the eve.

We havent attacked them yet with a rolling pin  :005: the crunching of the bones does make me hold my breath though, but all seems well, no upset tummys, dodgy poops,  bones have stayed " down " its just the mad half hr he has after having one - excitement i think and very proud of himself :)

He is a gentleman though as will " offer " us some drops it at our feet to see if we would like a "try " when we decline he takes it to bed and its gone within mins ! then does a loopy half hour lapping the living room and garden if the doors open - so i think he gives it the paws up ! and would thank COL himself if he could for giving me the courage to try them.
