Daisy inhales food!!
« on: April 22, 2010, 01:10:23 PM »
Hi all, I'm a newbie to the forum and am loving all the info I now have access to!  :D
We have a 5 month old show cocker who likes to inhale her food, I think the record time is now 10 seconds....can anyone recommend any tips on slowing this down.  So far i have tried a baking tray (maybe added one second) and putting something in her bowl as an obstruction to no avail....a friend speaks highly of the bowls you get to make them work for small kibbles at a time - any feedback on these before I make a purchase?!  I would just like her to enjoy her food more and get the best nutrition from it as she always looks to me for more when it's gone so fast... :016:

Hello, How much and how often are you feeding her? two or three times a day?

Hello and welcome to COL  :shades: I was going to suggest you use a treat ball, which you fill up with her kibble and then they have to push it along with their noses or paws, to enable the food to come out, it means she has to work at getting the food. which hopefully might slow her down a bit  :005: my two loved their treat balls, when they were pups :D

Thanks for your replies.  :D
I feed Daisy 180grams of Burns mini bites over 3 meals a day.  I think I will have to try one of these treat balls and see how we go! xx

We had this problem with Alfie. We now put a bit of water on it to make a type of gravy and this had worked fab for us! Its slowed him right down. He used to regurgitate (sp?) it before he ate it so fast but doing this really really helped! xxxx

Mole is a fast eater and I have never thought anything of it until I happened to see a new bowl in my local garden centre yesterday.

It is designed to slow their eating as the food fits into the cross and they have to work harder to get it out.

We actually managed to eat dinner and Mole was still eating, usually he has finished just as we start to eat  :005:

I paid about £4.50 per bowl and got Baja one too, (he eats at a normal pace but these stack together so easier to take on holiday)

Mole had about 10 pieces of kibble left which he couldn't get out, so he hit it with his paw until it tunred upside down so he could get the food out  :005:

They have now had 3 meals from the new bowl and it's proving a bit hit  :D

I can only find a link for buying in dollars, but here is what we have http://www.dogsupplies.com/products/Skidstop-Slow-Feed-Dog-Bowl.html

A tip I got from here was to put a kong in the bowl with the kibble...this really does work with Harvey - I do this in the morning, he has his lunch in two kongs with peanut butter - and his tea in a treat ball...it's worked for us  :D

Kira (my lab pup) inhaled food for a start, so i started just putting in a little kibble in her bowl at a time (otherwise she gulped hers down, and started on Taz - Mr. how-slow-can-i-eat-my-meal :005:).  I have been doing this a couple of months now and now i can put it down in 2 halves (rather than a bit at a time) and she tends to take a few in her mouth and look at me whilst she is chewing - i must take her over a minute to eat her meals now rather than 10 seconds.
