Suggestions for lead/collar for new puppy?
« on: May 27, 2010, 09:49:50 AM »
Hi, we're picking up our little bundle of mischief a week today and am now in the processing of bankrupting ourselves buying all the essentials ;)! I've bought a crate, bed and vet bed and just wondered if there was any particularly brand/type of collar and lead we should be using initially?

I used to have a boxer and we had a harness as she was so strong and pulled like crazy when we went out (mental note to self...training classes for this one...) plus we used it in the car to put seat belt through it but obviously it wont fit Daisy at this stage.

Many thanks :D!

Hi

Theres not much point spending money on an expensive set as your pupster will grow out of it/chew the lead. I just got freddie a puppy collar and lead set from pets at home, its quite cheap and does the job. I'll treat him to a more fun one when he has grown a bit more.

Its not on their website but they are in store

Good luck

Freddie had the puppy lead and collar too. It was fine for him. Grew out of it at about 5 months.

Here he is modeling it at about 9 weeks old:

I think I had a collar and lead set as part of the puppy pack from one of my breeders   :D

Keep it soft and light as chances are, pupster won't be used to wearing a collar and it's as much a "thing" to hold his name tag as a means of control in the early weeks.  We had a soft harness for Charlie when he started walks out.

Charlie is absolutely gorgeous - good name choice too, my son is called Daisy is black with a white spot on her nose - havent seen her since she was 3 weeks old though so I'm sure she will be unrecognisable! The harness looks great, we'll definitely move to a harness once she's bigger. Can I just ask you a totally unrelated question while I'm on?? At night time did you get up in the night to let your pup out for a wee or did you wait til morning? Daisy will be in a crate in the kitchen overnight and I've heard people say they left the pup until morning but others say they let them out halfway through the night. Also, any tips for first few nights for her being downstairs on her own? Its 16 years since I had my boxer puppy and I've had 2 children since then so my memory is shot! :005:

Getting up or leaving them comes down to personal choice, if you search on here, you'll find both works. Personally I've left them.  As long as they are safe and warm with something like a nice blanket or jumper to snuggle to, I'm sure Daisy will be fine.

Charlie was the only one of mine who'd kick up a fuss about going to bed (strange when he'd got the others for company) but then he's been argumentative from day one  ::)

Look forward to seeing pics of Daisy soon  :D

We left Freddie in his crate all night as well - paper at one end and bed the other. He was clean and dry at night inside the first week/10 days but maybe we were just lucky. He didn't wake us up to be let out either after the first week or so.

hi, Daisy is black with a white splodge on her nose - only 2 more sleeps til we get her!! My little girl Anya is beside herself with excitement. What is yours called? Have you decided what to do at night time? I've read a couple of books, one of them by Cesar Milan the Dog Whisperer, and they both say to have the puppy near you at night for the first few nights until she readjusts to being separated from the litter and mummy. Not sure what to do now!

On both occasions we have had puppies I have sent some towels to the breeder well in advance of collecting the pup so that they can absorb the smell of the pup's first 'home' and have then put the a towel in the puppy's bed for comfort - seemed reasonably successful.  Did something similar when Alice came to live with us aged 5 - her breeder and previous 'mummy' let her come with a piece of vetbed and a precious cuddly toy - and again, she settled very quickly.
HTH.
As for collar/lead, PAH straightforward webbing sort where there are no holes, you just stick 'prong' thing through to fit?  Once he was a little bigger went on to traditional rolled leather, available from good petshops.
