Just brought Daisy home...!!!!!!
« on: June 03, 2010, 05:59:53 PM »
Daisy is now in her new home and WOWZER, is complete chaos :o  Her and my 10 month old seem to be completely swapping toys so we're going to have to think of some way of keeping them separate. So, what do we do now....??!! Have forgotten everything from when I had my boxer pup 16 years ago and didnt have 2 children then :005:

She's so tiny and constantly on the move. We've put a couple of bits of her dry food in her crate and she has happily gone in there and nibbled them. Shut the door for 5 mins and she whimpered a bit but then when she went quiet we let her out and she is now wandering around the kitchen while we are giving youngest his tea. Am keeping my eye out for circling and sniffing so I can put her outside quickly (although we have already had one wee and one poop... ::)  While we are bathing and putting the kids to bed should we leave her in her crate or one of stay downstairs with her? When they are in bed and we are in sitting room should we just let her scamper around and suss out where she is. Sorry there are so many questions but I'm clueless and want to make her first few days as easy for her but lay the ground rules out. She's already "chewed" my little girls toes a couple of times and mine and we've just made a "tsssst" sound and walked away. Anything else I should do?

Thank you for any advice :luv:

Ahhhhh, wasn't so long I was doing the first few days at home with Monty, and it seems like an age ago now!  I've got 4 kids, so know how hard it can be to have a pup around as well.  Try to give her some time on her own in the crate before bedtime, so it isn't such a shock for her when you disappear off to bed.   for the first two nights I ended up sleeping on the sofa downstairs, with Monty on the floor next to me, as I couldn't bear the crying, :'( but then I got hard and left him to it.  took about 10 days to settle at bedtime, and still have the odd night when he cries when left.  If he does, I tend to go back downstairs and repeat the bedtime routine, and then he settles. I used the cage quite often for time outs, for puppy and kids. (not that I put the kids in there, though it is tempting at times!!) just that sometimes they need to be separated.  As far as toys go I tried, and mostly failed, to keep them separate, just because the kids seemed to leave their stuff everywhere.  After a few 'incidents' they learnt not to be soooo careless, but there are still times when a teddy will be kidnapped and buried in the garden!  :005: I found that the excitment of being around bouncy kids has lessened as he has got a bit older, I felt in the first few weeks as if I spent most of my time  separating him and the youngest before things got out of hand on the playbiting front, much improved now though.  House training is the hardest thing I found, just because I was often concentrating on other things, and would miss the cues.  He has hardly any accidents now at 6 months, and those he does have are because, again, I've been busy with kids etc and missed the cues, he has got better at asking though, and the older kids recognise the signs too, and let him out.
Hope some of this has been a help.  Enjoy her loads, and post some pics so we can see her!! :luv:

Yes I think that will be our main problem - missing the cues as distracted by children! I'm almost tempted to lock myself in the crate for time out never mind Daisy :005: She's currently having a sleep in the crate now - soooo cute - and am waiting for her to wake up so I can whisk her outside. Hubby is on bath duty! Heaven help me when he goes back to work on Monday - he works in Leeds all week and comes home on Thursdays so I'm a single parent midweek! At least when she is wonderfully obedient and trained and I can say its all down to me

Will def post some pics when she stays still long enough to take any ha ha!! Would love to see some of yours too - Daisy is so little so would be interesting to see how "big" a 6 month old is by comparison!!

1st night went much better than expected :D  She went in her crate with door shut at about 11pm (after having had a run around and wee in the garden beforehand) and we came down at 7am and she was happily laid in her crate! No poop but could feel the odd bit of wee on her vet bed. My hubby heard her very briefly at around 5am but not for long and she obviously settled herself back to sleep. Phew!!!!

Had her first lot of jabs this morning and was very well behaved   Now just need to sort out the millions of wees indoors....!!

I think my 10 month old has the best idea - just biffs her away when she bites his toes! I guess thats what mum/older sibling would do.... The "tssst" noise and claw like hand tap on side of neck is working for us at the moment - care of "The Dog Whisperer"!!  Its the wees that are currently testing me...just bought a huge amount of kitchen roll. The frustrating thing is she'll be out in the garden for 20 or so minutes and then do one as soon as she comes back in >:D  Not always in the same spot either so its not as though she's drawn back to the scent ::) It is only her 2nd day at home though so shouldnt expect miracles!!

what a cutie  :luv:
toilet training is so frustrating isn't it. When I first got Eric we definitely had more inside than out for the first couple of weeks. Just keep at it and Daisy will get the idea eventually

oh bless you thank you :luv:  last night was great - went in her crate and cried a bit which hadn't happened the previous night although I suspect its because she's more settled and wants to be with us more - we came down this morning at about 7am and she was completely dry :D!! We took her out into the garden and she had 2 wees and a poo - amazing!!

We've been out in the garden most of the day so far today as the weather has been so nice so we haven't had any accidents in the house yet but am trying not to get too excited as guess we could quite easily have good days and bad! Its like having a baby again - just about recovered from having my little boy 11 months ago :005:

Are you all prepared for Harry??! What colour is he?
