rolling on dead animals

why do 2 of my cocker's constantly roll on dead mice when they find them. Now Toby knows exactly where there is a dead cat on one of our walks and darts of and tries to roll on it why is this anyone know

It's in their DNA. A dead animal means danger around and they roll to disguise their own smell plus they love it!!

I was just going to say 'cos cockers are disgusting little mingers! but this sounds more sensible!!

 :lol2: Yes, the rotting dead frog that actually STUCK to Dave's back was an all time low point here :020:

I haven't thought about it too much, but as they roll in fox/deer etc poo also, I just presumed it was related to disguising their own scent in order to furnish them with some great hunting stealth mode - like an invisibility cloak, only not as pleasant ::)

I will never complain about paisley rolling in fox poo again!  I feel for you, I don't know what I'd do if she rolled in a dead animal!!!

Our Charlie once rolled about on a dead seagull on the beach.  We thought at first he was rolling in seaweed as the gull was covered in it.  Not soo happy when we realized it was a dead rotting gull.  Oh my dog the pong we had to drive all the way home with ALL the car windows wide open.  O/H wouldnt let Charlie into the house until I had run a bath for him so it was straight out of the car into the bath.  Took us about a week to get rid of the stench from the car.  What would we do without these crazy cockers.

And here's me thinking they just love the minging smell.  Ours are especially keen on dead seals, gulls and sheep.  And rotting afterbirths left at the edge of fields during lambing are a delicacy.  No end to it is there?

I took Millie on a walk years ago and she went running off, i could see she was rolling on what i thought was a white rock and i was worried she would hurt herself.  When i go closer i realised it was a white plastic bag with something rotting inside and maggots crawling all over it, the smell was horrendous.  I had to walk Millie home with something white and sticky stuck to her and smelling terrible, but she was very happy until the hose came out. :005:

I have a roller and a chomper  :005:  Tiff rolls in disgusting things, and Sasha eats them  :020:  Last weekend it was half a mole, and something I really couldn't identify but it looked like something out of a Clive Barker movie  :shades:
