Puppy Toys
« on: June 22, 2010, 08:15:28 AM »
Hi,

Our orange roan is due to join our mad household beginning of July, and wanted to know what kind of toys / treats we are able to give him. I have already brought him a Kong, a tug rope and some puppy balls. But wondered what kind of teddy to put in his crate, I would also like to start basic training with the help of treats  :005: but aren't sure which ones to use?

Thanks, Lisa

Hi,

Alfie absoloutely loves squeaky toys and always has- PAH and other pet shops will have plenty of these, they might drive us mad but they love them :005:. Alfie loves Kong Wubbas too and they squeak, they do fleecy ones too which would be perfect for your baba :luv:.

Puppy coachies are what we used at first as treats, we broke them into 3 pieces so we didnt go through too many at once and so Alfie wouldnt get a funny tummy.

Alfie didnt have a teddy in his crate, just lots of blankets so cant help you on that one

Good luck :D

Company of Animals make Puppy Coachies available from Pets at Home. With regarsa teddies; I searched all over for a big teddy without a squeaker. I found one in what was at the time the Mother's Day section in Sainsbury's. Make sure they have no beans in. Unfortunately most children's and baby teddies have beans in the bottom or feet and these are no good. Try all major super markets. Pets at Home have squeaky teddies and occasionally ones without squeakers. They also do blankie type things too. Pets at Home now seem to have a dedicated puppy section.

The first few weeks are going to be about play rather than teething specifically. Things with rattles, squeakers and bells in are brilliant as they get the senses exercised. Just get things which are specifically designed for puppies and their razor sharp teeth.

Have to admit, I let Odie choose a cuddly toy from one of my daughters!!  They put a pile on the floor and he chose a little tiny elephant (Ellie), which he has slept with in his crate overnight ever since :luv:  It was perfect because it was soft, no squeaker and no hard bits on. AND he never tried to bite or destroy it!  His favourite distraction was an empty water bottle with labels off, treats inside and top firmly on.  He now loves the P@H squeaky duck which he carries everywhere with him!

Treatwise, I just used the puppy ones from P@H and made pilchard/tuna cake (recipes in here somewhere) they love it!  Lesley  :D
Both taken away from us far too soon. x  RIP Angels Odie & Archie, causing mayhem at the Rainbow, no doubt!

Dylan's first soft toy was a monkey with really long arms and legs and tail - and a squeaker in his belly. I cant remember what brand it is - but it was from our local petshop - and I havent seen them any where else.

All I know is that this toy has lasted him the longest! All other soft toys he's been rough with and needed restictching or the squeakers broken - but this one he's so careful with but still plays with it daily - well he parades round the house with it still in his mouth squeaking it. It was so funny when he was sooo little because the legs were a bit too long and he'd constantly trip over them  :005:  :luv:

I'll keep a look out for it to try find the brand - but another suggestion is that duck mentioned above. My parents springer never had a soft toy until a few months ago (he's now 6) - as this was because their older dog destroyed anything like it - and any new toys were automatically hers. She passed away in March, so got him this duck, and he's such a puppy with it :luv: its also lasted a long time too!

One thing I wouldnt suggest straight away is soft toys with rope limbs - puppy teeth often get stuck in them and they find them easy to destroy unlike thicker grown up dog teeth.

For treats we used coachie looking treats, but they were the pets at home brand. Dylan loved them and when he was tiny, 1/3 of one was a decent sized treat. We also put them in his treat ball too.
