Cast iron bladder
« on: September 29, 2010, 06:34:36 PM »
My now 16 month boy Fraser seems to have a cast iron bladder. As it's not too long ago since he was a pup and getting him outside to pee in a timely manner was paramount, I'm surprised by the change. And it's quite recent. Since the unfortunate incident when the neighbour shouted at him for barking, I've been putting him on leash first thing in the morning to go out for a pee. He pees last thing at night, usually around 11 p.m. Wake up time is between 7 and 8 (joy, he's great at sleeping in). So, first thing I put a fleece over my jammies and put him out the patio door from my bedroom that lets on on the back garden. Instead of proceeding to pee, he sits down on the little balcony part and has a look out at the garden, in no rush whatsoever. Then at my prompting, he goes down the steps and stands about in the grass at the bottom, sniffing the air and chewing meditatively on bits of grass. To hurry the process, I lead him further onto the grass and stand there in the icy cold dew in my flip flops while he sniffs the plum tree, follows a scent trail hither and thither, sometimes sits down to have a quiet moment with the morning. But no pee. Now, when he goes out at night, I tell him 'pee now' and he does so after a bit of a sniff around. But in the morning, up to 9 hours later, he could care less. In fact, this morning after both of us standing about in the cold, he turned round and went back inside. I became convinced he must be peeing in the house somewhere while I was dressing and did a suspicious tour, peering into the corners and checking the walls in case he'd cocked a leg, but I can't find anything. Once I'm dressed, I take him down to the beach for a walk and even then, he was well into the walk before he stopped for a poo and didn't pee until much later. Do others here have cockers slow to pee in the morning? Fraser drinks water, seems bouncy and healthy, but he really must have a cast iron bladder.

Rodaidh (3 and a half) is similar to this, he never really seems desperate to get out for a pee and will sleep late at weekends without needing to go out. Sometimes he doesn't pee when I let them out last thing at night, he'll wander out but wander back in without doing anything and go through til the morning. Saying that he does cock his leg and mark continually when we're out on walks, I often wonder where he stores it all so it's no wonder he's empty by the time the evening rolls around :005:

Prior to her illness I often said Tilly (age 6) had a camel bladder too, she has to go a lot now as she's got kidney problems but before that she could go for absolutely ages without a pee and only went maybe 4 times a day.

I wish I could say the same about Caoimhe but she's still (at 20 months old) more of an 'I've gotta go and I've gotta go now' kind of girl ::) :005:

Glad to hear he's not alone in his prodigious bladder control. Wish I had it :D After all the urgency of puppyhood, I'm just not used to him not having to pee as soon as he goes outside. I guess I can trust that he knows what he needs.

Alfie is like this too.  :shades:  If it's heavy rain he will not even contemplate going out in the morning's & waits until the rain has stopped or just drizzling.  I think the longest he has lastest was from 10.30 p.m. until 2 p.m ish the following afternoon, about 15.5 hours  :o  I don't know how he does it!   Yet when we are out for walkies in the afternoon he will wee at least 4 or 5 times.  :shades:

William is another one. He can easily go 9+ hours without having a pee and even then I sometimes have to tell him "go pee".

Today has been a good example of that. He had a pee at about 10.30pm last night and wasn't bothered about going out in the garden when I got up just before 7.00am but I persuaded him to go out eventually. He and Louis had a walk mid morning and William cocked his leg a few times then. His next pee was when I made him go in the garden at about 5.00pm to ensure he had a pee before his vet appointment. He won't pee again until about 11.00pm and I may have to stand in the garden with him then to make sure that he does.

Louis is the complete opposite and likes to sprinkle little and often :005:

Sounds just like my Dillondoenuts. He'll go out for a walk /run between 6 and 8pm, peeing here, sprinkling there, and that's it then till 7.30am. That is if he can be bothered to get up outa bed  :005: :005:

If I'm lucky, he may go for a pee when I put my coat on to go to work about 9am, but then again, depends if it's raining or not. And if the grass is too long.....well, just forget it all together  >:D

Cast iron here too and will go more than 12 hours with absolute refusal to go on command, no such thing as a last wee or early wee unless we are camping when suddenly 5am is getting up time  >:D

Taz will hold it for hours in a morning.  for some reason, he doesnt like going in our garden so waits until we go for our walk.  He went for a wee around 10.30 last night, and it was gone 10.30 this morning before he went again when i took him to Fosse Meadows.

My collie cross was just the same though - i think she was the only female that only had 2 wees per day :005:

Brodie is the same - right from an early age, she never once had an accident at night as a pup. I can't count the amount of times I've stood out in the garden at night trying in vain to get her to wee, yet in the morning she isn't rushing to be let out in the garden.

Connie is another one who happily holds it  :005:
Tonight is a fine example, it has not stopped raining since 5.30 and she will not go out and get wet, she just stands
at the door sniffing and then strolls back in & gets back on the sofa.  I will try again before i go to bed.
Strange girl likes green muddy ponds but refuses to go outside in the rain.  >:D

Must be boys with good bladders! Uliss has a habit of being fast asleep one moment in the evening and suddenly leaping up "I'm DESPERATE".  I always miss the vital end of the TV programme, who won or who committed murder. She never can wait for the adverts. There's a dash to find my shoes as she's running round in circles "I want to pee NOW."
