Sunday Roast Lamb Bone

Hi guys

I think I know the answer to this question but ...

My neice and nephew have saved the lamb bone from their Sunday roast to give to Pebble.

When I was growing up we always gave our springer the lamb bone (only the lamb never chicken, beef or any other type as we were told that other bones splinter) and she loved it. However I know times and thinking have changed and I 'think' that no type of cooked bone is sensible. (Raw bones are of course OK)

Can you guys confirm - or is it safe to give her this?

Always gave my dogs the lamb bones, cooked ones at that and will continue with my Max!  My old boys loveeeeeeeeed them   

Maybe supervise Pebbles if you are a little concerned.

I personally would NEVER give a cooked bone to a dog, only raw. Cooked bones can splinter and not just get stuck in the throat but also cause problems inside the dog's stomach/intestines. For me I'd say it's just not worth the risk.

i gave my collie cross one when she was young - i had to follow her for days catching the diarroah

Def not cooked bones they are dangerous if they splinter.  Nothing wrong with scraping out the marrow though which dogs love.

One of my first 2 Cockers, Sam, stole and ate a cooked lamb chop bone and had diarrhoea with blood in it because the bone splinters scratched as they passed through. Poor Sam had an uncomfortable few days but luckily was then OK with the help of some antibiotics.

Personally I would consider it too much of a risk to feed a cooked bone of any sort.

A colleague of mine had a very scary incident where their dog had a cooked lamb bone lodged between the top and bottom of his jaw.

We have trouble with raw bone here and have to be very careful (mainly because Llewelyn hoovers his food) but the thought of splintered bones inside them just worries me silly. Not worth the stress and worry.

Thanks guys - I did not give it to her and explained to them about splintered bones.

We did scoop out the marrow though - which Pebble loved of course
