Chewing Stones

I am now the proud owner of a lovely 9 week old cocker spaniel boy (show-type). We are all having fun and also getting used to each other, a bit of crying at night and when left for a little while in his crate.  However, he loves the garden chasing leaves and then chewing leaves and stones! We are watching this and removing from his mouth.  Is this normal and is the odd swallowed stone going to do any serious harm? Would appreciate any advise or shared experiences. Thanks Jane

welcome to my world Jane  I have 2. 7 month old girls show type, who love nothing better than chewing stones  I usually manage to get them out but they may swallow one or two when I'm not looking as long as they are not too big your pupster should be ok  but just watch him in case he does try to swallow a big one.  Have fun with your new baby, now wheres the photo's ??  x x x

I have another stone-loving puppy here too I don't know where Toby finds them sometimes, he just brings them out from the hedges! He normally gets large ones and I will get them off him or he will drop them but he did once swallow a small one without me seeing but he was fine and it came out the other end Hope he is settling in well, he sounds lovely - look forward to seeing some photos of him

This is a relatively new habit of Freyas as shes been doing it for a few months and now two  She finds a stone, scoops it into her mouth and then seriouslly tries to chew it with her back teeth making a grinding sound until she spits it out again. I'm not worried about her swallowing them as she doesn't seem to be trying to do that but I cringe because of her teeth  I usually can get them off of her and dispose of them, and luckily there aren't many on the beach (where she does it mostly) but it is a worry

Yep, it's a puppy thing. Misty chews stones, leaves, sticks, soil and will eat them if she can. I try to take them of her or swop them for a treat.  So far no damage but it's not good, hopefully they will grow out of it.   Re teeth grinding, she also use to grind away at the patio step and the metal bird feeder but seems to have stopped that.

Are the stones in your garden in a certain area or are they random stones? When Willow was small she used to go over to our pebbled/stoned area and used to get the stones, I freaked.....  The more i freaked the worse it became. We then for a short time kept her on her lead not allowing her on that area. When we did let her off the lead and she went to that area we would tell her no, if she didnt listen we would put her on the lead. She soon got the idea and now we can relax in the garden and she knows she isnt allowed on that area of the garden, although she does push her luck every now and then if there is a pigeon on the fence

Maybe it is a puppy thing.  Pebbles seems to love anything metal or stone to really chew at which makes me cringe as it sounds so awful.  Of course all of her expensive puppy chewing toys just aren't as nice

Merlin still picks up stones but has progressed from chewing them to just carrying.  We've trained him to bring them back to us in exchange for a treat then reduced the frequency of treats so he isn't always rewarded for bringing us a stone.  My worry was that he'd break his teeth as they were too big to swallow.  The treat we exhcanged was often an ice cube as he wanted something cold to chew on.
