7 month recall deafness set in
« on: September 07, 2011, 10:46:37 AM »
Hi all

I know this has been touched on previously as have just spent half hour re-reading past posts but wondered if any one can reassure me !

Toby is 7 months, has done recall to a whistle and our voice and up until the last couple of weeks its been pretty good.

But .. and I know lots of you will be smiling because you know whats coming - lately he has been terrible coming back when playing with other dogs.

I know I need to go back to basics but he is not food motivated (lately been coming back and rushing past me even though have treat in hand).

We blow whistle, we dont follow him, we walk away, we get down to his level, we try and look exciting etc.

Today he would not come back, 2 ladies walked a fair way with him leaping and barking excitedly after their dogs.

Love him to bits but he is in kitchen now knowing I am pee-ed off with him !!! >:(

Can't offer advice Sara - sorry.  Pebbles, 19 weeks, is awful on recall as she isn't food motivated via treats at all.  she is far more interested in people and other dogs or noises.  It is so frustrating and we have resorted to keeping her on the long extendable lead on walks as just can't trust her to come back and there are some busier roads.  She is half way through her good citizen puppy training classes and, of course, does really well at recall in class    >:D

Will watch this thread with interest.

Time to get a long line...  ;)
That way he can't run past you, as you can step on the line to stop him.

When he *does* come to a stop in front of you (with your assistance!) reward him by drip feeding several high-value treats - experiment with the treats to find something he does value and use this only for recall at the minute - while doing this hold onto his collar for a while too, so he gets used to you holding his collar without it meaning the end of all the fun.  Then send him back to play, explore or what-have-you...  :D
Or is he toy motivated?  A game of tuggy can be a fantastic reward for a recall.... and you can use the tug toy to help get his attention - tie it on to a longer peice of rope and run with it dragging on the floor...  squeaky toys can also be helpful for getting attention when they are distracted (we ended up with a squeaky toy, threaded onto a ball-on-rope tuggy toy).

Practice recall when he ISN'T playing with other dogs - so the distraction level isn't so high... ideally recall him just before you meet some dogs he is likely to play with, then you can reward him by sending him off to play...
 :D

Don't use your recall command (verbal or whistle) unless you can guarantee that he will obey - if that means you only use the command when he is 3 feet away from you and you can see he is coming to you, so be it...  ;)  To get him to start coming to you, do the being exciting, high-pitched voice, running away, dragging the toy stuff...

If there is anywhere secure you can practise, try hiding from him.... don't be where he expects you to be - if he is playing, don't stay still, move about so he has keep half an eye on what you are doing - don't be predictable...

We trained Merlin's recall on a long line and it seems to have paid off for the most part. I'd second everything Karma said.

Most Of the time Merlin's recall is great but there have been some occasions where he just seems to say 'sod you
and those treats, this guy is fun!'.  For those times we use our secret weapon - a squeaky kong ball in our pocket.  We don't throw it - just squeak it and he comes trotting back followed by beautiful heel work.  When it's time to put him on lead we let him carry the ball home.  If Toby has a fave toy reserved for play with the two of you you could give that a go too. Hope that helps :)

Hi Sara,

Interesting thread. Been away from here for a couple of months enjoying walking Ollie this summer :005:

At home Ollie is a perfect angel. he pulls on the lead a little and reacts to the whistle but as soon as he see's another dog he's off. I can manage the recall if its just me and him especially if he's chasing birds.

It seems that were going backwards. The little turd is doing the wall of death at the moment.

OMG Darcey has been really good up until the last couple of days. Today she just legged it around the woods. Started getting really worried because of a road. + she's started eating carpet and eating jeans again etc. Can't believe it  >:D >:D >:D She's been such a good puppy so far. Am thinking it's adolescence. Hope she grows out of it tomorrow!!!!
