Raw Vegetable and Fruit
« on: September 07, 2011, 11:54:46 AM »
Not sure if the right board for this question but Pebbles ate a small piece of  raw courgette recently and loved it so have started to wonder what you can give puppies in the veg and fruit line for something different?  she is 19 weeks btw.  What do you give your dogs - preferably raw other than carrot which I know is good when they are teething?  Is there anything that you definetely can't give as it's not good for their tummies?

Thanks as ever.

Most fruit and veg is fine - avoid onion, avocado and grapes though.

Coco loves fruit and veg.

Her faves are:

carrot (frozen ones are great for teething pups too)
broccoli
cabbage
sprouts :dunno:
peas
cauliflower
lettuce
banana
apple
melon and her absolute fave is watermelon!  :D

The only things I would never give her are raw potato, onion and grapes  ;)

My 2 love all of the above apart from celery, and also like blueberries and pears.

As already mentioned, don't give grapes, avocado, onion or raw potato. Also, just in case you're not already aware, don't feed raisins or sultanas.

Sorry for interrupting, but is raw potato very harmful?

I only ask as when we were out last week Alfie (14 weeks) got into our potato sack that was in the cupboard and when we got back there were about 5 of them in his bed. He'd half eaten two of them and took chunks from the others. He pooed lots of runny, slightly frothy poo with lovely lumps of potato over the next couple of days but has since been/seems otherwise fine?

I'm a bit of a fretter anyway but am fretting now that it might have harmed him!

Thanks,

Penny

Thanks everyone.  Great to know most are fine.  Out of interest, and sorry to be a pain  ;)  but why not avocado, onion or potato or even raisins?  are they poisonous or just give them a runny tummy?

The green bits of potato are poisonous... I'm not entirely sure on raw potato, but I'm sure someone will come along who can fill us in.

Onion can be poisonous to dog - generally in large quantities, so a little bit in leftovers isn't going to be a worry,  but it's best to avoid it (NB Garlic is included in this, but a small amount is actually beneficial)

Some varieties of avocado have also been shown to be poisonous to dogs.

Grapes (and so raisins) can be deadly - I know of a lab who spent 3 days on a drip after eating only 8 grapes.  Like chocolate, it seems to be one of those things that some dogs are more susceptable to than others (our Cavvie when I was little ate loads of chocolate covered raisins and suffered nothing but the telling off she got!!!).

They are all poisoness to a degree though Millie licked some chocolate at the weekend and lived to tell about it -.-

Best to stay clear of them all members of the onion family are poisoness except for Garlic which can be given on occassion as it helps deter internal parasites and improves the immune systerm, milk products with the exception of live yogurt and goats milk should never be given as most animalss are dairy intolorant after they have weaned.
