changing food
« on: November 22, 2011, 01:04:57 PM »
I was wondering if any members could give me some advice on dog food. Alfie is 5 months and when I brought him home bought royal canin on the advise of the breeder. He doesn't seem to be too fussed for it and wasn't eating anywhere near the recommended daily amount so I started adding some chicken or a chopped up sausage to it. He the started eating only the chicken and not the food so I started adding a spoon of mashed down wet puppy food to it( even though I said I wouldn't do that!) This has been going well and he has been eating it ok. I am getting near the end of the royal canin bag and today my neighbour gave me a bag of bakers dried puppy food as she bought it my mistake for her adult dog and Alfie seemed to really like it. Do you think I should move to just the bakers or carry on with what I am doing. I really just wanted him to eat dried food only. What do other members give their dogs? Any advice would be gratefully received!

Bakers is not a very good food...it's a bit like giving children e numbers. There are lots of threads on food on this site but I certainly would not feed Bakers.
My dogs are fed raw diet.

Hi - Our pup Dillon (8.5 months) was also on Royal Canin and had almost the same sort of attitude to it as your pup.  We persevered for a good while as I didn't want to make him 'fussy' however about 3 weeks ago we decided to try something new.  We did a little research on here and with friends who own dogs and decided on James Wellbeloved 'Junior' Turkey & Rice.....blending a little with the RC initially and then gradually increasing the JWB until he is almost only on JWB now and really enjoying it.  He eats two meals a day now and both are gone immediately which is a good feeling for us and he seems to be doing well on it.
If you are changing him it is best to do it gradually so as not to upset his tummy and I also think you will find Bakers is not too popular here however that is your choice.
Good luck!

Hi,

We had the same issue with Florence. She came home with Hills but we always had to add things to make her eat it and gradually over time we had to add more and more extras to get her to eat it.

I looked on the various threads on the feeding pages and JWB, Burns and Barking Heads come up again and again (there are lots of other ones too!). All are dry kibble. I tried JWB and Barking Heads which she loved but gave her a dodgy tum. So I tried Burns and haven't looked back. She loves it, I don't have to add anything else and she's in fine health/ coat looks great. She's been on it about 3-4 months now.

I'd suggest trying some others- I thought Florence must be picky, but I think she just didn't like the food- your pup might be the same. If you call up/ go on the websites most will send you free samples. Just make sure that you transfer over v. slowly (over a week or more) or your pup my have a dodgy tum.

Good luck!  :D

We had the same with Darcey but her weight was always fine and because she was getting lots of training treats I wasn't too worried about it (although I was a bit). Bingley is a complete gobbler which seems to made Darcey a bit more urgent about getting her dinner eaten  :005: .

Hi Susan.....it is dry kibble and we only add a little warm water although he will eat it without.  I like the fact that you can also get different 'flavours' to keep it a bit interesting for them.

We have just successfully changed Millie onto JWB puppy from Pro Plan, I just felt she wasn't at her best on Pro Plan and her poos  were very loose and erratic at times, and the hugs bonus being that our local pet shop stock the JWB at 50p less a bag then PAH! So although not a huge saving I am happy giving the business to our local shop rather than travelling 10 miles to the nearest PAH, and our local pet shop will deliver for free...... fab service!

I mix a little warm water with te JWB and she is absolutely loving it! Although she will eat it dry she does prefer it moist.

Edited : Well after 3 days purely on JWB it appears that itmay not be as good as initally thought!! Millie's poos are practically water!!  She has been checked over by the vet and he recommended changing to CSJ (it's what he feeds his 2 cockers on .. so am off to order some now!!)
