Lump on upper lip
« on: December 17, 2011, 09:59:22 PM »
Taken delta t the vets on thurs for a check up after spaying, nurse said she was concerned for a lump n deltas upper lip that had appeared about 3wks ago which we thought was a wart as our previous cocker had warts so we thought it was norm....so went off t see the vet today, he said t could be Histiocytoma and metioned the word tumour which is when i switched off listening to him and went into sheer panic thinking i could loose my 17month old pup....can anyone give me any info about this please?

A hystiocytoma is a benign tumour, definitely not cancer. They're fairly common in young dogs and I think if you do a search on COL you'll find quite a few threads where other young Cockers have had them.

This link is to a vet website and gives some more information about hystiocytomas http://vetmedicine.about.com/od/diseasesconditionsfaqs/f/FAQ_histiocytom.htm

I can really understand the fear when the word tumour is mentioned, but not all tumours are cancerous, so try not to worry. Can I suggest that you phone your vet on Monday for a chat about it.

Sending you some reassuring hugs in the meantime  :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: and hopefully some of the people on here whose young Cockers have had Hystiocytomas will see this very soon and respond :-*

:bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: the word tumour sends us into a spin. Woody had a lump on his upper lip at about 15mths. The vet said leave it alone and it will probably go of its own accord, it did after several months.

Tali had one on his lower lid some months ago. Sorry lower eye lid. I left it and it went. He's got one come up on his nare (nose) now. I'll keep an eye on it but unless it  doesn't seem to go after the holidays then I shall not trouble the vet.

Pepper had a histiocytoma on her
ear hidden under a big matt when she
first arrived I only found it when I cut
the matt away and initially thought it
was a playbite or something but it
didn't start resolving so off to the
vet.... treatment was anti-infammatory
and anti-biotics, an aspirate was taken and
sent off for biopsy=all good.
It resolved after 3 weeks or so but she
did have a wee baldy spot when she went
to live in Scotland(at Easter) and I don't
know if she had fur grow over it eventually
steffxxx

So....a month has passed since we took delta to get her lump checked out, somedays it's a redder than others it doesn't seem to bother her and deffo doesn't stop her eating/drinking/chewing her bone! The vets want to book her in to remove it, I said I wanted to get it checked that its not cancerous and if its benign then it can stay where it is.....in for a check up this fri so we will see....

poor Delta, and poor you ... lots of  :bigarmhug: and  :luv: for you both.

I am sure she will manage just fine, you may need to soften her food perhaps, or maybe to vet will prescribed her a bit of canned hills science diet whilst she's recovering.

I have found that whilst Jennie has been poorly, if she wasn't drinking enough I would give her an ice cube to crunch on, yes she's mad, calorie free treats though!  :005: ; of course she doesn't have a poorly mouth, but maybe Delta would munch an ice cube too if you're worried about her drinking with her poorly mouth

Delta loves ice cubes! And even more when I chop banana up and freeze it in an ice cube! They gave her that tinned food before when she had a tummy bug so will prob be the same, thanks for the advice
