over weight charlie
« on: January 04, 2012, 07:48:39 PM »
Hi there again, in my last post i told you that i had just got a recue dog charlie he is just 5 years old, all is well settled in better than i could have wished for, now yesterday i took him to my local pet supplies and had confirmed what i thought, charlie is over weight, he weighs in at 22.2kg and if i am right he should come in at around 12...16kg. i just wondered if anybody could recommend a decent diet for him to go onto, he is happy in himself and is getting lots of walks daily as i dont think before he did, we are not feeding him tit bits and only giving him rawhide chews........ hopefully somebody can shed some light on this for me and shed some weight of my darling charlie.
many many thanks
liss

At our vet they run weight watchers
for the furries and it's no charge!
Like all weight loss slow and steady
is the key, so have a look at his food,
as Poppsie says "what is he eating?"
make sure you weigh his food don't
guess.
Alongside looking at his food ,upping
his excersise will help.
We found with Ellie that an extra 20
minutes spent running has made her
extra k's fall off and she is much livlier.
But I do mean running not extra walking
as she can be quite passive on a walk
we started bringing the tennis ball and
that has worked.
Be realistic in your time frame, losing
weight should take time, as it takes
time to put on.
Personally I would seek help from my
vet (especially as it's free at ours) as
they can guide you.
We wish you all the best
steffnelliexxx
eta thinking about this last night,
i should have been more clear in that
I mean vet advice for start weight, target
weight and timescale for losing rather than
type of food as you will get better advice
here for that ;)

The guide you have for him may be too light for your boy. I'd aim initially at getting him down to say between 18-19kg and see how he looks then. You should be able to feel his ribs easily but as I say for your boy he may be bigger set than the guide you have and he may well look half starved when he's finished dieting. ph34r
