What an awful shock for you and your other half let alone poor jemima

Cannot believe reading the forum to find two poor cocker doggies with the same type of illness . Both my mums sausage dogs had this and were operated on and I remember how difficult it was for mum to help them recover so I feel for you and poor lyla.

Will be thinking of you and am sure that there are the people on here like sheryl with her fab little fighter Lyla to hold your hand through the next couple of days ...

Take good care  :luv:

Update on Miss Jemima. Vet rang last night, the op went well and they have managed to remove all of the debris that was hanging around. She was still really flat after the op though. Just spoke to one of the nurses, she is okay in herself and her tail is still wagging! They are worried that she hasn't eaten anything while she has been with them and the nurse asked me what she likes to eat. I had to fess up and admit that they have "fish sticks" every morning, also scrambled egg. I also had to admit that they have a range of food through the week, including two asda cooked chickens on a monday, liver on a Tuesday and mince on a wednesday, the list goes on! I've just rang my friend who has a doggy pushchair and she is letting me have it for Jem. I thought that we can get out and about when she gets home. Thank you so much everyone for your support. It really does mean the world to us and is helping us through it. I read the posts at night when the Phil has gone to work and it makes me feel better to know that I'm not alone.  :luv:

What are the chances of two of our COL'ers having this happen to their fur babies...... :-\

Hope Jemima makes a full and speedy recovery  :-*

From what Sheryl's surgeon has told her and from what I have since read this is my understanding of why cockers are at risk.

Disc degeneration / disease has two forms, one that affects Non Chondrodystrophoid dogs (larger breeds) and one that affects Chondrodystrophoid (smaller / dwarf breeds).

The Chondrodystrophoid group sub divides further into Disproportionate Chondrodystrophoid breeds ie dachshunds, basset hounds etc which have long backs and short legs and Proportionate Chondrodystrophoid breeds which outwardly look normal. Cockers are in the latter group.

In dogs from the chondrodystrophoid groups their intervertebral discs start to harden at an accelerated rate fairly early on in life and since they are still so active  it makes them more prone to slipping and rupturing. They generally present with symptoms around the ages of 3-7 yrs.

If you look at Lylas progress you will see that I couldn't get Lyla to eat at all.  She had nothing for about a week.  In the end we had to take her for some injections that kick started everything.  Jemima will probably pick up when she gets home but if not, I have the list of drugs they gave her to help xx

I think that i'll ring later and see if they have managed to get her to eat anything. It's really difficult as I would ask if I could go over and she might eat if she sees me. But, it could upset her and make her fret even more if she sees me and then I have to leave her there again. Ooooh, it's soooo difficult  :luv:
