Getting on with Raw Food and some questions please
« on: January 10, 2012, 04:09:08 PM »
After a week of 100% raw diet, is really enjoying her mealtimes - even though I have become stressed out in making sure she has enough variety and quantity!

My OH looks in the fridge most nights after work and everything he picks up he gets the response "thats for the dog!" :005: :005:

Anyway still confused about the amount in weight she should be getting.  Some say 3% of ideal adult weight which equates to around 420g per day at 14kg or at Jinleys age range (20-24 weeks) 5.5%-6.5% of bodyweight which is around 100g more!  Is that adult ideal or current weight (she is 9kg).

She has a meal plan which looks at variety over a 14 day period and I have given vegetables a miss as she turns her nose up at the food when they are added (although she will eat the odd carrot I understand unless they are mulch they are of no nutrient value)

On a daily basis she has 20% of RMB which is generally chicken wing (my butcher is getting some wild rabbit for us) and the other 80% made up of meat/muscle and offal in smaller quantities - I have found a market stall nearby which sells tripe.

2 Eggs a week and pilchards/sardines replace a meat meal.  She has fish oil capsule with added Vit C daily and a tsp of Cod Liver Oil with Vit A,D and E.  Am I missing anything?

Am I right in saying that other bones such as lamb ribs are classed as recreational because she does not eat the bone, merely strips the meat off them then buries the bone! >:( >:( Therefore should not be included in the 20%?

Do egg shells need to be included in the 20% RMB or can they be extra?  I bake them in the oven then grind them to a powder and add a spoon to mince.

Thanks for your help.  Off to do my OH beans on toast for tea   :lol2: :lol2:  Jinley has some Irish beef from the bargain shelf at Tesco!

Pat and a very contented Jinley!

Selby is on raw and is 2 years old and weighs between 10 and 11 kg a d he has 250 GR per day made up of muscle meat, and liver, kidney, heart, tripe. Breakfast maybe a raw sardine, egg, chicken wing, and twice a week a marrow bone, the only supplement I give him is omega 3 oil and vit b, he will also have raw carrot, I do still sprinkle egg shell on may be 2 to 3 times a week.

If you check some of the old threads on here you should find a lot of information.

I am sure so done that knows a lot more than me will be long.

Good luck

I find I need to feed quite a lot to keep mine at a nice weight compared to when they were on dry.
Have you tried your local butcher too? Mine makes me up 'dog bags' which I collect 3 times a week.  Its' supposed to be all the off-cuts and stuff but sometimes mine are sitting munching steak and me and OH have egg and chips!!lol.  I just give mine this and chuck in a chicken leg every couple of days for bone.  When I give eggs, I just half the egg shell and chuck it in with the eggy in both halves.  Mine love it this way.  I was such a worrier when I first started then I read this awesome book about prey model feeding.  Basically, it's a natural feeding method.  I mean, in the wild the dogs wouldn't be panicing about not getting the correct nutrients, they would just eat what they could and after all these years of evolution, I think they've done allright :005:.  What I mean is, don't make the tea such a issue/worry for yourself just feed what you have.
There is a puddle on the floor,
tis there for all to see,
now is this puddle H20,
or is this K9 pee?

We've just this week started Skye on raw, she's a very fussy eater and doesn't like kibble at all, so I've just bought a bulk order from Raw2Paw in Weston Super Mare (a new company) minced duck, beef, heart, tripe, tripe with oily fish, beef bones, chicken wings, chicken necks.

So as original post, how much should I be feeding and what mixture meats/bones, can anybody recommend a good book, having always fed kibble with occasional raw in between it's all new to me.

Skye is 16 weeks old and weight 6.5kgs.  Thanks

mine get a variety of chicken carcasses/chicken wings/thighs, turkey neck, lamb or beef ribs which they eat completely. they get 1 or 2 marrowbones a week which my lab eats all up  :005:  ph34r but if theres any left billy will finish off as he doesn't eat his marrowbone, just strips it but once alfie has had a good chew and made it easier billy will have a good munch... i love the white boney poos that are so easy to pick up  ph34r They also have white fish and sardines/mackeral or pilchards once or twice a week. Then they get an egg plus shell twice a week, i just crack it open and they have it like that.... they also have a variety of meat, tripe and offal throughout the week and then i add a couple of spoons of pulped veg. Ontop of that i add keepers mix, garlic and a joint supplement  :D

I mainly switched to raw because alfie my lab has terrible allergies but the raw food diet has helped so much its no longer a huge problem  :D but i do worry i'm not giving them the correct amounts but i just think so long as they get a variety and are happy and healthy then thats the best i can do... i have read alot of the books which have helped but for alfie he's so much happier on this diet which makes all the effort of pulping veg and chopping hearts, kidneys etc  :020: worth while  :D

According to the Raw2Paw site (which looks great - and as my in-laws are in Somerset we might be able to get occassional orders from them!), at 16 weeks she should be on 6.5-7.5% of body weight... so that would be about 450g over a day.

If you feed occassional raw treats, I assume she is used to chicken wings?  If so I would start out on one meal of chicken wings and the other two of one of your minced meats... it's a good idea not to introduce too much variety at first, but to build it up over a few weeks.  The tripe might be a good place to start, as it's generally well tolerated.

Assuming the bones are a little more boney than supermarket bought chicken wings (pet supply ones do tend to be) I think a 1/3 meaty bone, 2/3 other meat mix would be a good starting point - the aim is for 10% of total diet to be pure bone.  The other thing you would need to do eventually is to introduce some offal (10% of total diet should be glandular offal (liver, kidney or pancreas)) but I would wait until she is settled on the new food before introducing this in small quantities, as it can upset tums.

The Tom Lonsdale book is quite a good read (can't remember the title off-hand I'm afraid)....

We don't feed any veg or supplements.

alot of raw feeding people don't feed veg but i figured it can't do any harm  I add garlic to help repell fleas/ticks and the keepers mix i read is a good supplement for raw diets  and the joint supplement because billy had a period of limping and xrays showed nothing up but as i give it to my lab i didn't think it would do bills any harm either

Its quite confusing really to know what to do for the best, i would hate to not be giving them the correct balance of everything... thats the one thing i liked with complete foods, it was all done for you  but they do LOVE raw and my lab has a lovely shiny coat with it and the vet is happy with him and the diet so i'll continue :)

Oh absolutely - I started out feeding veg and looking into all the supplements, and I know a lot of people do prefer to, was just pointing out I don't so those new to raw feeding are aware that there are different ways of approaching it.  Some people feed twice as much veg as they do meat... the main thing is that, within the meat/bone component, the ratios should be about 10/10/80 of pure bone/glandular offal/muscle meat (remembering that meaty bones contain meat AND bone...) - then it's a case of tinkering around the edges to find out what exact amout of bone suits your dog.  :D

The addition of veg can be very useful for a dog used to the larger meals of a kibble fed dog... but Honey's a fussy little swine and wouldn't eat it now I suspect, so it's just something I don't worry about myself.  :D

I was pleasantly surprised at how much meat are on the chicken wings, a lot better than Asda ones, hubby asked if they were fit for human consumption as Skye now eats better than him.... :005:

I have to say too, not a lot of waste  ph34r comes out either, which is great!

twice as much veg as meat?  :o that must cost a fortune... once i've pulped the veg it goes down to hardly anything!!!

I have a lab so don't have problems with fussy eating  :005: and i think billy knows if he doesn't eat it alfie will  :005:

Just be warned to anyone starting out feeding raw that you do end up wanting a dog freezer or like me your dogs food starts off in just one freezer drawer and gradually creeps into another until you realise the dogs have more freezer space than you do

I've been wondering for a while if i could add mint to the dogs food to make their breath smell nice and minty? Would that work?  ph34r Sorry for hi-jacking this thread  ph34r

In that case over time (probably as she cuts down to 2 meals) I would aim for half the meals meaty bones and half just meat... I find it easier to give the boney meal in the mornings, as I found Honey was getting constipated if she had bone at night and then just slept, but things are much better if she eats her bones in the morning.  A couple of times a fortnight we swap a boney meal for fish, and that seems to be about the right balance for Honey.

I'm sure you could add mint - not sure you could add enough to counteract the smell of all the yucky stuff they like to snarf, though....  :005:
And, yes, we have a dog food freezer.... though occassionally we get to use it too....

Hi,

Jinley also wont eat veg (although she will eat cooked carrots if we have any left over).  She is having approximately 450g a day (she is approx 9 kg and I am giving her 5%) made up (at the moment) with 1 chicken wing for breakfast (it weighs around 100g) and 2 meals made up with a variety of beef chunks / lamb breast / beef heart / liver (once a week) raw egg (twice a week) - and anything else my local butcher gives me in my weekly variety pack!

She has lamb neck bones a couple of times a week, but only has the meat off them.  If I try to give her more than one chicken wing for breakfast, she eats one and hides the other (usually under a cushion or behind the curtains!).  My son in law is going to get me a wild rabbit this week for a treat!

Sad I know, but when I get home and take everything out of the variety pack, it is the same as having a Christmas Hamper having a look at whats included! :lol2: :lol2:

The only other thing I add now is Vit C (daily) Cod Liver Oil with added vits (every other day) and an odourless garlic capsule (a couple of times a week at the moment).

I find the supplements the hardest thing to get right as I am yet to find a website that can give me an idea of the recommended daily allowance needed for puppies / dogs!

Surprisingly it is not working out much more expensive than a premium kibble - but it is worth it to see her enjoy her food.

Worry, worry, worry :dunno: :dunno:

Just one word about Raw2paw (distributors of DAF foods) and bone content.....as Karma so rightly says, aim for about 10% bone....almost all the R2P minces contain this already in the proportions 80/10/10 (I enquired as I was interested in a possible "local" supplier, reply was that the tripe doesn't contain bone but all the others do....).....so feeding a meal of wings and a meal of mince will over-egg the pudding, so to speak! Just be sure not to feed RMBs with bone-in minces and you'll be fine!  ;)

Use parsley to help freshen the breath, not mint.

then at about 10.00am he will have a chicken wing
he then has his dinner of 150g
1 week it will be some turkey necks, heart, lamb mince.
2 week will be beef chunks, heart, lamb mince
