Me and my partner have been considering a dog for a couple of years now and have finally settled on a Cocker after she vetoed my suggestion of a Newfoundland :lol2: We live in Cheshire and have quite an active lifestyle with lots of running and walking. My partner works from home and I'm currently out of work and looking for a part time job, but that may have to be put on hold for a while.

Many thanks to all the contributors on here, it's a great resource to research all the questions that we have to make sure we're making the right decision for us and the dog. I'm sure I'll be asking many questions over the next few months and may be asking for some suggestions for good local breeders once we feel we are prepared, if you can ever be prepared for a Cocker :D

We were new to cockers until we got our lovely golden working strain cocker almost a year ago. She is everything we wanted and more  :luv:
Good luck in your search for your cocker, are you hoping to have a working or show strain?
In the preparation for her we did lots of research etc but nothing could of prepared us for the work that was involved with a cocker pup.  :005:
She was blooming hard work as a pup but all our hard work and training is finally paying off, but be warned they never run out of energy  :005: However they never run out of wanting cuddles and being affectionate either  :luv:

We're quite active, but I think we'll go for a show strain cocker as I wouldn't want the dog climbing the walls because it hasn't had 5 hours of exercise. I'd like to take it on my usual a 8 mile offroad run each day through, so wouldn't want a couch potato.

I have a show whilst not a couch potato and can walk miles, does sound like a worker would benefit from your active lifestyle, so I would be open to both if I were you. Welcome to you x

Nice to have you along Nobbie.

Not all workers climb the walls if they don't get 5 hours of exercise! And not all show types are couch potatoes either. My guess is that the right cocker will be somewhere waiting for you. Last time I was looking for a show type and ended up with a lovely wee worker who could take as much or as little walking as we gave her, and although she got at least two walks of some kind each day, they weren't necessarily long. Now we have a wee show type and she seems just the same - happy with whatever she gets.

Hello  Welcome to COL.  :D
I am owned by Charlie a 6yr old orange & white show type and he is always happy with what ever exercise we offer him. Short walks in the week 1 or 2 miles , topped up with ball play in the garden and  longer walks at weekends.

Newfoundlands are slightly bigger than spaniels.

But good choice. Spaniels are the bestest. A working or a show spaniel will suit you; see what is available in your area and decide from there. One will pick you :p

Thanks for all the replies, looks like either strain could be suitable from the comments above. So much for narrowing down the search! At least I know which puppies breeders to avoid now >:( from all the info on the forum.

 :005:   sounds very similar to me Nobbie - my hubby vetoed me getting a Newfoundland 8 years ago  >:(  ......... but a woman scorned & all that - I got my own back & now have 4 cockers  :rofl1: 3 show type girls & a young working rescue boy  :angel:  All unique, all individual & all wonderful  :luv:  (love them all to bits but will still have a Newf one day .........& bet you do too if you like them that much  ;) :lol2: )

Ha, Ha,

so rather than one Newf asleep most of the day, hubbie's got 4 Cockers bouncing around :005: love it :D

Saw a brown ex-rescue Show Cocker while doing Cross Country at the weekend and spoke to the owner, really lovely dog, but once it got the smell of wildlife it was off apparently, that would be too worrying for me.

Our working strain cocker has in the week two, half an hour walks a day only. At the weekend more if and when we are free. I think they need as much mental exercise as physical. Although when we have walked her for a few hours at the weekend I think she would be raring to go for more  ;) ;) When she was a pup she had endless energy but fits in with us now and at a year old she is proving to be a fab little dog  :D Whatever you decide good luck  :D
