And now to add another problem to the mix......
« on: January 23, 2012, 05:19:38 PM »
I think Kali is going deaf. :'(. I did think at first that it was selective deafness but the other day she was sleeping on the kitchen sofa and Mr S and I carried all the shopping in, banging and crashing about and she never moved!  It isn't just sleeping though.  When she is out, you can keep shouting her and she just meanders about until you are nearly on top of her and then she is startled that you are actually there.  Is there a test for deafness in dogs?

The only BAER testing centre I can see in Scotland is:
Royal Dick Vet college
Easterbush Vet centre
Easterbush
Roslin
Mid lothian
EH25 9RG
Prof I G Mayhew tel 0131 650 1000

From what I can see they don't sedate unless essential and the test is around £40 but higher if sedation required.

Hope she is ok. :luv:

Take her to your vet.  I thought my old Akita was deaf as she started showing the same symptoms as your girl but she wasn't deaf.  Turned out she had canine dementia.  She could hear perfectly well, she just couldn't work out who we were talking too!
My spaniel has started to behave this way now too but with her, it's selective deafness >:D
There is a puddle on the floor,
tis there for all to see,
now is this puddle H20,

Our collie Sophie has got progressively more deaf over the last year. It's really difficult when she is off lead now as she hates other dogs and I need plenty of warning to get her back on her lead. She is not at all a naughty dog and as soon as she looks at me and sees a hand signal indicating her lead she stops, as good as gold. But it's when we let her out in the garden for a quick wee that we really find it tiresome as she goes off on a thorough check of every corner no matter how many times I call her in. She seems to be able to hear lower voices better so I am trying to perfect  Barry White voice which is a bit strange!

The one advantage is that she sleeps very soundly now which is a blessing as she would jump up at every sound before.

Bless her!

Sorry your not having a good time at the minute, hope Kalis hearing improves but if it doesnt please dont get too upset as its not as bad as it seems.  My old GR Marcus started to loose hearing at about 7 years old   :'( and by the time he was 10 he was stone deaf.  It was difficult at first but Marcus learned to obey signs just as he would if he could hear what I was saying. Not knowing he was deaf people would ask why does he stare at you all the time, I would say because im his ears and he needs to watch me to get instruction.   Even on fields he would  recall, sit, down, stay and stop immediately.  When we came to a road when my feet came together he would stop and sit down.  We formed a stronger bond and he was my soul mate  :luv:

Thinking about it he was better when he couldnt hear than when he could
It also solved his barking when someone came to the door.  :005:
