Diesel Disaster at first swimming experience

Oh dear, glad you got him back ok.  Pepper gave me a scare on the beach at the weekend as she decided to chase the gulls and crows onto the rocks and in the sea!!  She's never gone near before (something I'm quite happy about )  It was at this time she became stone deaf too and all recall training disappeared    Thankfully, she was absolutely fine but I suspect I'll be taking a towel whenever we go near water in future

I know how you felt. My first cocker Sherwood nearly killed himself by getting dragged into a fast flowing tidal culvert after he decided to swim back to me instead of using the bridge that he had used to cross the creek. He was pulled backwards into a dark tunnel which went under a viaduct and opened into the river Dart. I was about to jump in but my Dad stopped me. We scrambled up over the viaduct expecting to see a tiny speck out in the open river but there was nothing. Turns out Woody was still in the tunnel trying to swim against the tide but was just treading water. When we called him, he turned round and shot out past us - my Dad just managed to grab his collar in time. Terrifying for us but he was totally unphased and swam at every opportunity afterwards. The one thing my Dad said to me afterwards was to remember those tragic tales of people either drowning or being lost after falling through ice because they go in after a dog. When they are reported on T.V., the last sentence is usually "the dog got out on it's own". Worth remembering.

Oh Charlene,your story just reminded me,
Here is ickle bickle Ruby,i think she is around 4 months old in this pic,OH was on his own here with her and it was her first sighting of big water....................She jumped in just after this pic was taken. 
She sank,bobbed up in a panic and was then scrabbling at the bank to get out which was to high for her so OH had to lay down,lean over and grab her by the scruff of her neck and haul her out.

We still visit this place and she still jumps in but doesn't seem to like being out of her depth.

Diesel will probably do it again Charlene,i dont know many cockers that don't like water so maybe the long line is a good idea til he gets the hang of it

OH im glad im not the only one that has had a scare involving water ...
hopefully next time he will swim back
