I love watching the dog whisperer

He says that you should just totally totally ignore a dog upon entering the house (or your guests should) no matter how much noise they make, or how jumpy / close they get. You shouldn't even tell them to be quiet / behave / get down / get off.
Once they have settled down, then you can call them over for attention.
We have been trying this with our 2 - it starts off noisy but after 5 mins or so they seem to give up and go and lie down.
They still do it every time, but what was happening was people enter, dogs get excited, people fuss dogs, dogs get more excited.. by ignoring them they get calmer quicker and then don't get as excited once they've been spoken to .. if that makes sense. I'm hoping at some point they will twig that if they just stayed calm & quiet they'd get the fuss straightaway!
