…that I’ve just been out walking Alfie in  – 4deg C  wearing underwear, camisole, ribbed long sleeved polo neck jumper, indoor fleece, lined trousers, ¾ woollen socks, lined calf length boots, quilted coat, fleece hat, woollen scarf and thermal gloves …… and Alfie is out exactly as he was in the summer! I think it’s just amazing that they can go from winter to summer without any major change in their coats. Alfie is having a haircut next week and it won’t make any difference to him for going out in the cold. Wouldn’t someone be worth a fortune if they could invent clothes for humans that were cool in the summer and warm in the winter?

Darcey doesn't like the cold. When we let her out for a loo break she's back at the door as soon as she's done!

Kizzy used to hate the cold/wet/windy/too hot weather but my three now dont care, Bailey jumped in the water yesterday , it would probably kill us but they really dont seem to feel the cold yet we STILL worry if we have to say,  put them in kennels in march

Millie doesn't feel the cold much on a walk (unless she gets wet) but during the day she's a right wuss. She goes into a stable when I'm working and I have to put two beds in her crate, wrap the crate in a duvet, put her coat on and change her hot water bottle every two hours  . I also have to change the bedding several times throughout the day as it gets damp from her walks. My colleagues lab and springer don't have anything extra in the cold and they don't seem to care!

Alfie has been out rolling on the thick ground frost in seventh heaven this morning!!  His favourite places to lie are on the front and back door mats to get any draft and he rarely comes over to be near the fire. He does get very hot in the summer however, especially as he has such a thick coat.

Good thread I was just about to start a similar one.  Two Aussie  cockers never seen snow, I've just dried them for the 3rd time today, Rome has snow today well woke up to snow and it hasn't stopped all day. I think they are playing with me they don't usually need to go out that often, but today they keep sitting at the door so me also enjoying the snow, gear up coat hat boots then out we all go lots of laughing Indi being more playful than she has for a long time the two of them run around like they are at the beach in the sand . Luckily I have a big blow dryer for them. One question though snow balls what do you put on them to stop them forming I tried Alpha Keri oil didn't work was it Vaseline don't want to smear sticky oily stuff on them if its the wrong thing.

You know I hadn't really thought about that one too much.  It is amazing that they adjust so well to the fall in temperature.  Ours only really have their coats on if it is wet and muddy (because it saves me a lot of work cleaning their skirts when we get back).  But, as for the cold, they don't seem too bothered.

Mine don't seem to mind the cold (-10 here all day and snowing), it's use ice on their feet and the salt affects them so we don't go too far. You can get coats with legs in that can help with the snow balls. Tried everything and they still get them. Mind you we can have a foot of snow overnight!

Honey wanted to lie out in the back garden this afternoon in her "sunbeam" spot.  The fact that that means I have to leave the back door open means she didn't get to indulge herself for very long...

I got Canter Mane & Tail conditioner spray (for horses) on the recommendation of another COL member when I posted about problem snowballs on Alfie's feet as I didn't fancy vaseline getting clarted on the furnishings. I tried Olive oil which I didn't find successful and the only twice we've had snow this winter he's still had snowballs despite the Mane & Tail spray, but I'd say smaller and less of than previously. It seems to depend on the texture of the snow. Sometimes it can be quite deep and no snowballs, while other times there's relatively little and the snowballs appear quite rapidly.

Brodie must be the odd one out, she hates the cold - she's spent most of the day cuddled under a blanket with me on the sofa . She won't wear a coat though so she just has to put up with it outside. I just used a conditioning spray from PAH on her during the last snow, worked very well, much better than olive oil or Vaseline
