Puppy food query
« on: February 04, 2012, 12:10:47 AM »
Hey all,
Hamish has gone off his food a bit this week. He's just getting over an inflammed bowel, was on chicken and rice over the weekend but went back onto his regular food (James Wellbeloved lamb and rice dry puppy food) a few days ago with no problems, he was really excited about it on Tuesday and Wednesday, then last night and today he's looked as if he's disappointed when I put it down in front of him, we've had to wet it a bit to get him to eat it. He did this with the food we had him on before (puppy field and trial dry food) which was why we changed to James Wellbeloved. We're gonna try him on a different flavour to see if he's maybe just bored with the one he's on, just wondered what others experiences of this food are.
Thanks
Julie x

JWB is a good food but we had Willow on it and it didnt really agree with her, runny poops and windy..... weve changed her over now, the vet told us they thought she had colitis. She was on the RC sensitivity food for while and we have now put her on barking heads. Its hard trying to pick the right food for them isnt it?

Tried it on one of mine, and he liked it, but it didn't agree with him. Nothing too bad, just looser stools. I'm probably a meanie, but I've not changed my puppies' food if they've decided they're bored with it. I've rather persisted. Put the food down, encouraged them to eat it. If they hadn't eaten within 10 mins, then I picked up the food until next feed time. They've never starved themselves for long and aren't fussy eaters now. Good luck with your little one.

You could try mixing a teaspoon of pro biotic yoghurt with it, then the pup might like it.  :D

Hamish is probably holding out for the yummy chicken he's been having.  ph34r Try putting a bit of chicken in with the kibble to wean him back onto it.
Mind you, I think this does seem to be a phase pups go through! My last pup did it at this age and Archie is going through it too. He started on veterinary Royal Canin but I thought JWB seemed a better food so I switched gradually when the RC started to run low. He liked JWB but because of loose poops and some accidents in the house overnight I tried to find something else. He wouldn't touch any of the usual suspects (Burns, Barking Heads etc) so I have gone back to the RC. He was only slightly more interested in that so I now add a bit of wainwrights puppy wet food and he LOVES it. It's quite squishy stuff so a little bit mixes well through all the kibble. Great to see an empty bowl and normal poops again.
