Never had a dog before
« on: February 04, 2012, 04:34:09 PM »
We've just adopted a 3 year old female cocker spaniel - we are a family that has never had a dog before. She's lovely, well trained and no problems really, we are learning fast about how to look after her but does anyone have any tips? Amvic

Welcome to COL.  Are there any particular issues you are having with her?  It may be best to post a list of specific questions you may have rather than ask for general tips.

Just one tip of the top of my head .........  you need to post a photo!

Hello and welcome, I agree with black taz you do need to post some photos of your furry baby....  :005: :005:

The one tips from me is once you have welcome a cocker into your home you are smitten and your lives will never be the same ( in a good way )  ;) ;) If your cocker is anything like ours she will take your place on the sofa and pinch your socks and then steal your heart  :005: :005:

Thanks to everyone who asked for a picture - this is Poppy, aged 3, out in the snow with my son today. One of the specific things to ask is about her food - she hasn't taken much notice of the 'wags' biscuit food we were advised to get, and she's always scrounging when we are eating. We don't want to start passing scraps of our food to her because it will be setting up a bad habit, but because she's already got this habit we feel mean making her only eat her own food. It's only day 2 of having her - how long will it take before she happily eats her own food?

Welcome to COL- cant help with the eating as my two are complete gannets (but then again they live in fear of either of them getting each others food  :005:), I am sure she will eat when she is ready, have you tried adding some natural yoghurt to her food or even a little warm water?

I was going to say that hot water releases the smells and for a fussy dog would be good or add a bit of tuna for a while and gradually add less.
