Halti - Well pleased
« on: March 01, 2012, 12:52:53 PM »
Ok, if I am honest I have been trying to avoid taking the dogs walkies. Why I hear you shout? because they pulls my darn hands and arms off.  The walks are unpleasant and I have really not been enjoying them.

Now to the good news.  Sun was shining bright and I bought halti about a week ago, my dog, why didn't I try one ages ago.  Ok, Jay wondered what on earth was going off at first and tried to get it off, but 5 mins in to the street walk (we avoid street walking due to pulling) he was walking by my side and it was amazing.  Duggie who also pulls because they try to see who can get to places first, slowed down and after 6 or 7 minutes BOTH dogs were walking lovely and my shoulders relaxed and I manged to have loose (ish) leads.

I did keep checking that the nose band bit didn't ride into his eyes or any other problems, it must have been a lovely fit.

Why oh why didn't I try it ages ago.  I quickly told my OH and he can't wait to try it now.  I am actually looking forward to the next walk :luv:

I regularly use a dogmatic head collar when we're doing a pavement walk or in town   It's lovely to have well behaved cocker trotting along at our side.

I have had the K9 bridle for a week now (similar to halti) and dog walking has changed so much. Pavement walks are so much easier. I can't get over the difference it makes and would recommend a nose collar to anyone struggling with a puller!!

The k9 bridle is much better than the Halti (in my opinion)
lts Unlike most other training halters the K9 Bridle works from the back of the neck, exactly where you need to have control

The problem is that the point of control is from under the chin and so twists the dogs head to the side. This can cause vertebral damage and the dog soon learns that he can still pull if he tilts his head to the side. Under the chin is fine if your dog is 5 feet tall!

when Bob was younger i used them all and this one was for us by far much better...... now we only ever use it if we go to outdoor show

Thanks guys, I'll look into those at a later date, this is just the start and was good to get out the house!!  I only used it to pavement walk to and from the woods, they are only 5 mins away.  I took the halti off at that point and even when I needed him back on the lead for a bit I let him walk without the Halti.  It was just so nice not to have my arms ripped off.

Can I ask you what size you ordered? I normally use a Gentle Leader, but since Murph had his eye removed I've not used it and have had him on a harness. He has started to pull again and since everything has healed in his eye area I'm going to have to use a head collar of some description, but I can't have one that rides up and the K9 bridle looks like it doesn't go near the eyes.

I rang them up and they recommended the small. It seems fine size wise but they would of been happy to swap it if it didn't fit.

That's the size I thought would fit, but I'll give them a ring and tell them about his eye just to be on the safe side.

I ordered a k9 bridle and used for 2 days...fab product, although I contacted them as is a little big for my boy, agreed to exchange with no problem, just waiting for the extra small to come so I can get back to nice controllable walking  :D
I'm normally on my phone, please forgive any typing errors!

I swear by the Gencon - brilliant!!!!  Even a 2 year old could walk my springer x lab with her Gencon on.
Penny,   Dexter (cavalier x poodle), Alfie (Whippet cross)  and  Maximus the cocker spaniel!!

RIP my 2 most gorgeous cocker girls - Buffy and Harriet - both waiting for me at the bridge. Joined by my beloved Josie taken too soon and Suki aged 13 :(

I have just ordered a Gentle Leader, medium size,  for Henry, after reading reviews of the various products.

Does anyone know differently?

I'm not keen on the gentle leader as it can 'turn' on the nose, doesn't pull the nose down which gives you more control, and just doesn't have the same type of control (my personal opinion only).

The thing about the k9bridle is that when they pull it pulls their nose downwards so they can't continue to pull forwards and the pulling stops.

Dogmatic = brilliant, just the thing for that extra bit of power steering on pavement walks. Although he still performs very occasional 'airs above the ground' in protest at not being able to pull my arms off and thottle himself silly. :005:

I have just been looking at the Dogmatic harness for Lottie as her current harness causes matts under her armpits. >:D   Do you need to buy the leads as well ? I have just bought Lottie and Lola new leads from Red dingo so don't really want to have to buy another if I can help it  :-\
