How do you know if you've gone too far with a Coat King?

I've been doing Fraser's back and a lot of what looks like fluff has come out. What's worrying me a bit is how much gray is showing (he's a dark blue roan), yet when he comes back from the professional groomer, he still looks black on his back, even after he's taken off a lot of the fluff. He's not really looking bald, but is there a danger of over doing it? And if so, how would you know? I don't want to get to the point of seeing skin and thinking, oh carp, should have stopped 10 minutes ago.

You say he is Blue roan so I would be working more on the dark solid colour patches with the coat King and in the roaned out areas I tend to use my fine comb.

I tend to look at what I get through the Coat King should mostly be fluff / dead coat just becarefull at the angle you are holding the Coat King as it is possible to cut the coat.

You may just be doing it to frequently
