First Groom
« on: May 29, 2012, 08:34:31 AM »
Riley will be nearly 5 months old when he has his first groom at the end of next month. Im so unsure of what to ask for her to use.
The groomer has a good reputation, Ive seen her photos and she shows and grooms her own dogs.
At the weekend we met some older cockers and I was really impressed at how natural they were. Riley is quite hairy and fluffy already, I know he will need his nails trimmed, around his feet trimmed but Im really liking the feathering on his legs.

SO do I ask for just a tidy up, or should I just have the nails / feet done etc, also what DONT I want her to use, clippers, but are scissors ok?
I guess I will speak to her before she starts but please advice what I should ask for on his first groom, which is to really get him used to the groomer with minimal haircut, Thanks.  :D

I think you're right to go for a minimal groom at first. Perhaps just a bath and a tidy up round the feet. That way he'll get used to the groomer and you'll have more time to see how his coat is developing.

Tilly is getting her first groom on Saterday at 8 months old....she looks like a bear at the moment. I am much the same as not sure what to get done. Our elder cocker girl is clipped really short with just a small skirt left intact but she is really woollyand curly which makes her matt real easy so a full clip is ok for her. Tilly on the other hand is still fluffy but her hair is long and straight and really dont want her clipped short...just more managable and comfortable in our current heatwave.....i would hate to see her all short.

Does the groomer show cockers, if so I'm sure she will do a gd job :D. I had a pup in for his first trim at 5mths, the owners may show him, so I hand stripped him, we got a carry bag off fur out of him  :005:

Riley was absolutely gorgeous at the weekend - good job there were lots of people there I would have sneaked him home with me!  :luv:

At first I would just ask for a tidy up - bath, feet, nails.  That's what we had done first for Dexter.  He is going for his second tidy up on the 9th June as his top knot is getting silly again.  I am wanting to keep him looking natural so trying to avoid the clippers!   ph34r
