Sore ear
« on: June 20, 2012, 02:16:36 PM »
Hi

On our walk earlier, Dylan suddenly started howling/shrieking and whimpering.  He came straight to me and despite running my hands over him I couldn't see anything obvious.  We were on a large patch of grass with 2 other dogs (one is also mine) and neither were near him.

After a minute or two it became clear that it was his right ear.  He was scratching it and whimpered when I touched it.  But I can't see anything.  He was holding his head to one side and wouldn't leave me so he is clearly distressed about something.

I have managed to get him home and made an appointment for the vet at 4.45 today.  If its just a fly trapped inside, it won't really harm him but will drive him mad.  I guess it could be a sting.  I have bathed his ear in cold water and he is calmer now, but subdued and not himself at all.

Does anyone have any ideas about what I can do?  Or is the vet the best option to check his ear canal?

Thanks
a worried mam xx

I would get the vet to check it in case its a  >:D grass seed... they can go right down into the ear canal and be really horrible.  Would have expected a little swelling if it was a sting.  Fingers crossed its not a grass seed tho and he's ok  :luv:

Thanks.

I was hoping it wouldn't be that.  He isn't great at letting me poke about in his ears, but he has been sitting and encouraging me to do it.  He's flat out now but just not himself.  Hope the vet can find it and fix it fairly easily.

Poor Dylan, it does rather sound like a grass seed,  >:D if he has his head on one side :shades: when George was a puppy he perforated his eardrum from a grass seed and that was in spite of rushing him to the Vets, luckily the ear did heal :D the last  time George had another one down his ear ph34r the Vet managed to just sedate him and whip it out very quickly, while i held on to him
i hope the visit to the vet goes well and Dylan does not get too stressed  :luv:

yer grass seed I would say.

Millie had one when she was just over a year old... did all the things you described.
She had to be sedated and had her ears rinsed out, unfortunately it perforated her ear drum too .. not sure if it ever healed to be honest, or whether she just suffers from cocker deafness

Hi

Back from the vets and they can't be sure but think its a grass seed.  The vet thinks she could see something in his ear but he squealed again and wriggled a lot.  It might be wax, but as something isn't quire right, he is going in tomorrow morning for a general anaesthetic where his ear can be checked properly.

I think its the right thing to do but I am worried about leaving him, worried about the anaesthetic, and worried in general.  My girl will miss him like mad as they are never separated, so she will no doubt distract me.

Fingers crossed its all fixed soon enough and the only lasting damage is my bank account.

Thanks for all your comments.
