Opinions on pain relief after spaying, today please!
« on: July 12, 2012, 10:52:01 AM »
Hi all,

I dropped Jem off at 8am to be spayed. One of the questions on the consent form was do I want pain relief to take home.
I know the reason why it may not be a good idea- so that they will self limit how active they are, but I just wondered what others did if they were offered this? I don't remember being offered this option with our other 2 dogs.
I don't want her to suffer unnecessarily but I don't want to dose her up too much so she does too much and damages herself.

Thank in advance :)

I asked for it for Lyla because Kali had a painful time after.  I didn't give it to her for long but I always felt that if I came out of hospital after a major op, I would want something for a few days and dogs feel pain just the same!

We definitely had pain relief for Meg. Saying that, she wad trying to jump over the furniture after the first night! Just had to keep an eye on her and try to limit her activity.

I would too - just make sure it is enough to keep her comfortable but not enough that she thinks she is Superwoman!

Let us know how you get on.

Hi,
As you know Roxy was spayed yesterday, I wasn't offered any pain relief to bring home and she's been ok. I slept downstairs with her last night and there were a couple of times when she struggled to get comfortable and I think she pulled her stitches when she got up this morning as she tried to run away from something then stopped and licked herself  :'( But she's been fine walking around, defiantly slower than normal but I know that's a good thing. Maybe just have them to hand so you can give them to her if she needs them?
I hope she's ok when you pick her up, I got a little tail wag :luv:

The vet phoned, she is fine! Massive phew! I wasn't expecting a call til after 2pm so very happy now.

I can collect her after 3:30pm, safe to say I will be on the doorstep on the dot!

We will get some pain relief just for a day or so I think.

Thanks all for your help x

The vets I go to don't give you a choice its home with painkillers (rimadyl) and antibiotics and thats that, but my girl was in a lot of pain post op and I would have needed them anyway. I think off the top of my head they gave her 5 days worth and we used the lot. Penny was 8 when she had her spay and wasn't in any position to bounce anywhere, but I'd rather have painkillers and choose not to give them than see a dog in agony and have to go back to vets to get them. Its also better to take regular than be hit and miss as that way the levels are in the system and pain relief is more instant iyswim.

I wasn't offered any when Coco was spayed - she had a long lasting painkiller when she was there - and she was absolutely fine after.  :D  Even with no pain relief, I had a terrible job keeping her from charging about so I would say, unless she is in obvious pain, I would not bother  ;)

Jem is home safe and sound. Very sleepy and making little whimpers, bless her, but she is ok. She won't eat yet, tried her with scrambled egg but will try again in a couple of hours.

So relieved it is all done now X
