Castration jab

Sorry I dont know what its called, But what are your thoughts on the jab that chemically castrates males.
Have you used it, and was it beneficial compared to a full castration ?

Don't know anything about it but......I wouldn't be to keen on a hormone injection that is possibly long term, but as I say I don't know any thing about it.

My neighbour used it on her retriever - his character completely changed, he went from a bouncy and playful boy to an old man overnight. It was horrible. As soon as it wore out he was back to his normal self. I'm not sure if the same thing would have happened if he was neutered, but his owner doesn't want to find out

Supreloin is a 6 month implant rather than the jab I believe. I know my vet advised against this as it can have negative affects on anxious or nervous dogs. Once it's in it can't be removed without a lot of trouble.

I tried the monthly jab - I think it was called tardac - when I was considering castration for one of my boys. He can be a bit nervous/mouthy with new people/male dogs sometimes so wanted to check the removal of his hormones wouldn't make his nerves worse! The jab seemed to make other entire males less forceful with him and he them but otherwise I didn't see any difference. However with the vets support it gave me more peace of mind about considering castration which we have now done about 4 months ago. He's still the same loving yet neurotic personality as before, after castration, but he has less bother with other males now, is more settled somehow and definately over time more focussed on us when out and about. Still having to practice training though.

I would suggest speaking to your vet and a behaviourist if your question is due to behaviour they really helped us.

The only reason I was considering this was to stop unwanted Babies,
Thankfully he is ok, with no real issues behavior wise, I just dont want him fathering any offspring

We used the monthly jab once for Buddy when he first arrived. He was too overweight to be castrated but also very grumpy with other male dogs. Our vet said that there was a chance that his behaviour wouldn't improve with castration as at 7 years old it could be ingrained.

He had the jab and his behaviour towards other male dogs improved dramatically (I know this would depend on your dog), we could tell to the half hour when it wore off as he turned into a grumbly wotsit again. Luckily by then he'd lost enough weight to be castrated anyway.

I wouldn't use the monthly jab as a long term method of contraception though. There are health benefits to having your dog castrated though, so you may want to weigh those benefits up before looking at an implant such as supreloin.

I had the castration jab on my Chow as he had prostrate problems.  The idea behind it in our case was to see if that would resolve his issues - which it did.  It gave the vet and I 3 months to see whether castration was the way to go before we went ahead and had him surgically castrated.
