Poo concerns...

So, after taking Rolo to the vets last Friday for his soft and runny poo's he is still having problems!

It cost us £70 last week for them to give us a course of anti-biotics, some pro-colin paste and some ear cleaner (different prob) and his poos are still not back to normal, in fact they are even more runny!

I think it is from things he is picking up and eating when we are on walks and in the garden as he just hoovers up everything he comes across and is particularly attracted to the rubbish the kids leave over the local park!

I dont really see the point in taking him back to the vets for them to charge me another fortune for treatment that doesnt work. Ive heard people say that they starve the dog for a day and then give them plain chicken and rice. Do you think i should give this a go?

He is still absoloutely fine within himself but his poo's are so awful, nothing firm in there whatsoever! (sorry!)

Its worth giving him a try on boiled chicken and plain boiled rice to see if it helps. Chicken doesn't always agree with Charlie so I give him mince instead (fried, put through a sieve for all the fat to drain off, and then dried on kitchen roll  ).

What do you feed him normally?

I've used the chicken and rice before and it did help. I part cooked the rice and then added the chopped chicken to the simmering rice later (so it had long enough to cook). I find that the chicken juices flavour the rice a little and make it more palatable.

When Max was little he had poo problems. Vet thought it was because he was eating everything in garden and suggested a muzzle. Could t bring myself to do that so took him out to toilet on lead and kept him inside other than on walks. Didn't make much difference though. Then switched his food to something without chicken and this made big difference. So all the chicken and rice had not been helping!!

Max always had sensitive tum but the Jwb foods helped. Finally switched to raw diet and his pops are perfect. He also grew out of eating everything in garden.

Don't know if this is much help but maybe try ruling things out to see if you can get an improvement.

i found jwb to be to rich for megan she is now raw fed and has lovely poops ( only us cocker owners can be delighted to talk about poo experiences  )

We feed him on fish4puppies kibble which he has been on since the beginning and we never used to have this problem however for treats we give him Hills chicken flavoured puppy kibble that we got given from the vets. Do you think it could be this upsetting his tummy?

What other treats could we use for training that are more healthy and do not contain chicken?

What is it about chicken that has this affect?

It's not necessarily the chicken (although it could be) but I don't think I'd carry on with the Hills training treats.  When Molly was little (and still now) for treats we used little pieces of ham, hot dog sausage, and primula cheese for recall.  You could perhaps stop with the chicken and try plain white fish with rice or maybe some scrambled egg?  We also use pro-kolin and always keep a tube in, but buy it online it's much cheaper!

But like you said, it could be that he's eating things he shouldn't outside.  Molly is a devil for this (she still is now).

Riley came to us with runny poop,s (had to put kitchen roll on them then pick em up) then had to water down the area, was that bad, we gave him chicken and rice for about 4 days, then we changed to James wellbeloved and wow, its amazing he has totally firmed up. I imagined at one point he would never firm up. Now at times its quite the opposite.
He loves the lamb, duck and fish flavour, eats it with enthusiasm each meal and has firm poops for about 2 1/2 months now (he tries to eat everything in the garden/on walks too )

Chicken is light on the stomach, I cant understand how chicken affects dogs much , tbh
You could try a few days on chicken and rice, Im sure that will firm him up and when introducing food again thats a good time to change , (our vet said this)

Riley was on beta and we stopped it outright and gave him chicken and rice, his poo,s firmed up almost instantly, kept him on it a few days then gradually introduced JWB, the turkey one wasnt a big hit , so we tried the fish, lamb and then duck. If I can say they are a pleasure to pick up now haha, infact I dont pick up any of the stones the he poo,s on like before we had to pick up lots of them along with the poop, too much info I know lol. Good luck, hope goes ok, it wont harm Rolo to go straight onto chicken and rice,  Thing is though he might love it riley did, but had no bother introducing him to JWB at the end of a few days, I put a tiny bit in bowl, drained hot water over it and added bit chicken then gradually phased out chicken. Let us know how he goes.

Hi caz, my old dog had loads of tummy problems.  Some of the things we used to feed him on was:

Chicken and rice
White fish and rice
Turkey leg (boiled) and rice/pasta
Natures diet

Monty's on CSJ cp27 puppy and has never had a runny tummy (jwb gave him stinky guffs and softer poops)

Chicken can upset tums as well    when Penny was tiny, we overdid the chicken and she had runny poos for a couple of days.
