Dog not very well
« on: August 05, 2012, 04:53:49 PM »
Hi Everyone i'm a bit worried about our 18 month cocker spaniel, just picked him up yesterday from an elderly couple who was looking after him for the past two weeks and he is not himself at all.  He is lethargic and sleepy, He always comes back sleepy because he has been so active with the other dogs the lady has staying at her house, however this time he has diarrohea his nose is dry and his breathing doesn't sound right. I've been told none of the other dogs were sick and that he was fine when he was there, He drank a little and ate a little, but i'm worried and our vet is shut today. Any ideas would be appreciated thanks

Are his gums nice and pink ?? does his fur go back quickly at the back of his neck ? if not he could be a little bit dehydrated  :luv:

Does your vet not have an emergency number? Or is there another vet nearby? I would be wanting to speak to a vet for advice :-\. It's the bit about the breathing that I find a little concerning. Hopefully he has just eaten something he shouldn't but better safe than sorry - hope he is better soon :luv:

Personally I'd be ringing the vet, I'm sure they have an out of hours service. He doesn't sound well poor chap.

Thanks for your help , Yes Niquet perhaps, he does eat some of the other dogs food while he's there, but i would only expect upset tum with that.  His gums seem quite pale Poppsie and i'm not sure about his fur. Yes i think i will try the out of hours because i don't like the breathing either thanks everyone.

Hopefully the vet will give you some advice and hopefully put your mind at ease (and get the little one feeling better of course!).

I agree, I'd be getting in touch with the vet.  Pale gums, lethargic and odd breathing dont sound good

Hope everything goes ok x

Hope you have managed to get him to the vets Hun pale gums aren't a good sign he may have an infection going on somewhere  :luv: :luv: x x x

Hi again everyone and thanks for all your replys Just back from the out of hours medivet and he has an upper respiratory tract infection also conjunctivitis and found a bit of blood in his poo when they took his temperature....thinks it's from straining and not concerned about it, so he had an antibiotic injection Synulox  also a course of synulox tablets, bisolvon sachet to help with the congestion and fucithalmic ointment for his eyes.  :'(  He wasn't dehydrated and didn't have a temperature. he has eaten a little more since we got home and drank some water also. vet thinks it was likely to have been from the stress of boarding. Poor thing hope this will sort it all out now. we're going away again in a few weeks so really worried about leaving him again.

I'm glad you got help and that it is nothing too bad   Pale gums are not always a sign of something bad, sometimes they are just pale. If are worried about dehydration just tap the gums, they will feel tacky if your dog is dehydrated.

Poor little thing! Where abouts are you?  Maybe someone on here might know somewhere less stressful where he can board when you next go away.
